‘I Should Have Won 8 Nobel Peace Prizes’: Trump Attacks Committee Over Navi Pillay’s Win

US President Donald Trump attacked the Norwegian Nobel Committee after it awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Indian-origin South African jurist Navi Pillay, claiming that his role in resolving international conflicts entitled him to eight prizes.
In a lengthy Truth Social post on Friday, Trump questioned Pillay’s credentials, accused her of hostility towards Israel and repeated his assertion that he had settled eight wars.
“In actuality, I should have won 8 Nobel Peace Prizes, not just 1,” he wrote.
The Nobel Committee, in its statement announcing the award, credited Pillay with exceptional courage and integrity in strengthening the international legal order and helping ensure the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

TRUMP REPEATS EIGHT-WAR CLAIM
Trump listed conflicts and disputes involving Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, India and Pakistan, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Israel and Hamas.
He claimed leaders of countries he had helped had written to the Nobel Committee in support of his nomination.
“I settled 8 Wars, with letters being sent from every President and Prime Minister from the countries that I helped to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and I’m about to settle, or win, two more, Iran and, Russia/Ukraine,” Trump said.
He also cited the return of Israeli hostages, claimed he had prevented Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and asserted that he had helped avert conflicts involving other countries in Asia.
Trump criticised the United Nations, saying it had provided no assistance in the conflicts he claimed to have resolved.
“The United States of America, represented by me, as your President, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t. This is an indelible stain on Norway, one that will never be forgotten,” he wrote.
NOBEL COMMITTEE RECOGNISES PILLAY’S LEGAL WORK
Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has served as a judge on South Africa’s High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court.
She also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory until recently and serves as a judge in the International Court of Justice case concerning allegations of genocide against Myanmar.
Trump said he knew “nothing about this woman” and alleged that she “hates Israel”.
The committee’s citation focused on her contribution to international justice and accountability for some of the gravest crimes under international law.
INDIA HAS REJECTED TRUMP’S MEDIATION CLAIM
Trump’s inclusion of India and Pakistan in his list of conflicts repeats a claim New Delhi has consistently disputed.
India maintains that the understanding to halt military action during Operation Sindoor was reached through direct contact between the two countries’ Directors General of Military Operations, after Pakistan’s DGMO approached his Indian counterpart.
New Delhi has rejected suggestions of external mediation.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam attack. Military action was halted on May 10 after the DGMO-level understanding.
PAKISTAN BACKS TRUMP’S NOBEL BID
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his support for Trump’s nomination, saying he hoped the US president’s peace efforts would receive recognition.
“In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Pakistan had nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Sharif said.
Separately, Washington announced additional sanctions against the International Criminal Court on Friday, the same day Pillay’s award was announced, citing concerns about American sovereignty.
