EXPLAINED: The Alleged Hindu Temple Shooting Plot in Illinois—and How Police Uncovered It

The investigation began with someone raising an alarm over electronic messages. What followed was the arrest of a 19-year-old, the recovery of weapons and ammunition, and the discovery of what police describe as a plan to attack a Hindu place of worship in Illinois.
Alexandros Paporakis now faces charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons. Investigators believe he may have intended to strike on October 11. India’s consulate in Chicago has welcomed the police response and said it is in contact with the Indian diaspora.
WHAT WAS THE ALLEGED TARGET?
Investigators believe Paporakis was considering an attack on a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area of Illinois. Police said a document he allegedly shared outlined a mass shooting plan. Their examination of electronic communications and other material led detectives to believe October 11 may have been the intended date. Palatine and Mount Prospect police handled the initial investigation and arrest. The suspected target was in the Aurora area.

HOW DID POLICE UNCOVER THE SUSPECTED PLOT?
An individual reported receiving concerning electronic communications from Paporakis. Mount Prospect Police passed that information to Palatine Police on October 11. According to investigators, the messages included the alleged attack plan and images showing a rifle, rifle magazines, body armour and tactical equipment. Officers located Paporakis and took him into custody as he was leaving his residence. Palatine Police Chief William Nord credited both the person who raised the alarm and the rapid exchange of information between departments. “The seriousness of this alleged threat cannot be overstated,” Nord said.
WHAT DID INVESTIGATORS FIND AT HIS HOME?
Detectives obtained a search warrant and recovered a rifle, multiple loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of rifle ammunition and tactical equipment, according to police. They also found a tactical vest containing body armour and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism. Investigators are examining the recovered items alongside the electronic communications and document attributed to Paporakis as they continue to assess the alleged plot.
WHY ARE WHITE SUPREMACIST LINKS UNDER SCRUTINY?
Police said the material attributed to Paporakis contained white supremacist and extremist statements, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent. Those alleged statements, together with the imagery on the recovered vest, form part of the investigation into the suspected motive. The FBI assisted local police in examining the threat. FBI Chicago Special Agent in Charge Ryan Whalen said the agency works with local and state authorities to investigate threats of violence driven by radical ideologies. He said Paporakis had been taken into custody without harm to the community.
WHAT CHARGES DOES THE SUSPECT FACE?
Paporakis has been charged with one count of making a terrorist threat, a Class X felony, and one count of unlawful possession of weapons. He appeared at a detention hearing on Wednesday, October 14, when a judge ordered him detained. The charges are allegations; the detention order is not a finding of guilt. The investigation remains ongoing.
HAVE OTHER HINDU PLACES OF WORSHIP BEEN ALERTED?
Yes. Police said they coordinated outreach to Hindu places of worship within their jurisdiction to inform them about the threat information uncovered during the investigation. Nord said protecting communities and places of worship remained a priority, adding that police would continue working with their law enforcement partners. The outreach followed the discovery of material suggesting a Hindu place of worship could be targeted.
HOW HAS INDIA RESPONDED?
The Consulate General of India in Chicago said it was aware of reports concerning a foiled attempt to target a place of worship in Aurora and appreciated the timely police response. “We are in touch with members of the Indian diaspora and are closely monitoring developments,” the consulate said. Its statement came as US authorities continued examining the alleged plan, the suspect’s communications and the equipment recovered from his residence.
