Bug Eyes, A Hanging Tongue And A Very Big Win: Meet Jinny Lu, The World’s Ugliest Dog 2026

She has bulging eyes. A tongue that seems permanently determined to escape. A face that looks as though it has spent years perfecting the art of looking completely unimpressed. And now, Jinny Lu is officially the World’s Ugliest Dog.
The six-year-old pug won the 2026 contest at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, California, on August 14, beating a field of unusual-looking canine competitors and taking home a $5,000 prize for her owner, Michelle Grady. The event marked the contest's 50th anniversary.
But call her ugly and Jinny Lu's story becomes only half the story. Because before the crown, there was a rescue.

From South Korea to the winner's podium
Jinny Lu was rescued in South Korea before being adopted and brought to the United States. A report shared by The Economic Times said she had been saved from the dog-meat trade. Other reports describe her more broadly as a rescued pug from South Korea.
She had already come remarkably close to winning. In 2025, Jinny Lu finished second. A year later, she returned to the competition and went one place better. Her owner, Michelle Grady, reportedly adopted her through Pug Rescue about four years ago. And this time, the judges were convinced. Jinny Lu's winning combination included her enormous eyes, wrinkled face and tongue hanging out over her lower jaw — features that might not win a conventional dog show, but are precisely what this competition celebrates.
Wait — why does this contest even exist?
That is the joke hiding inside the name. The World's Ugliest Dog Contest isn't really about ugliness. Organisers say the event is about celebrating dogs with unusual appearances and highlighting the value of animal adoption. The official contest description stresses that it is intended to celebrate the individual character and imperfections of dogs rather than mock them. And rescue dogs have become a major part of that message.
Many of the competitors arrive with stories that are considerably more moving than their funny faces suggest. Some have survived neglect, abandonment, illness or difficult beginnings. Jinny Lu fits that tradition rather perfectly. She went from being a rescued dog in South Korea to standing in front of judges in California — and then walking away with the biggest prize of the night.
The competition was celebrating 50 years of “ugly”
This year's contest was particularly special because it marked its 50th anniversary. For five decades, the event has turned unconventional canine looks into a celebration rather than a reason for dogs to be overlooked. And Jinny Lu wasn't the only memorable face in the 2026 field.
Pinky, a Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, finished second and received $3,000, while Otto, a Chihuahua mix, took third and received $2,000, according to People.
But Jinny Lu had the moment everyone came to see. The crown. The cameras. And, presumably, a considerable amount of tongue.
She is not the first rescue dog to turn “ugly” into fame
The competition has produced a string of memorable winners over the years. In 2024, Wild Thang, an eight-year-old Pekingese, won after coming second in the competition multiple times. His unusual appearance was partly linked to the effects of distemper he suffered as a puppy, including teeth that failed to develop properly and left his tongue protruding. At the time, the contest reportedly helped raise awareness about animal rescue and adoption.
Then came Petunia, a hairless French bulldog-English bulldog mix, who won in 2025 after being rescued from a backyard breeder and hoarder in Las Vegas.
Now Jinny Lu has joined that peculiar little hall of fame. And perhaps that is the most charming thing about the whole spectacle. The dogs that might be passed over at first glance are getting a spotlight. The dogs that don't fit the conventional idea of “beautiful” are being celebrated.
And the dog that once needed rescuing from South Korea is now the face of one of the world's strangest — and surprisingly heartwarming — competitions.
So yes, Jinny Lu is officially the World's Ugliest Dog 2026. But look at that face for long enough and you might arrive at a different conclusion. Maybe she was never ugly. Maybe she was just waiting for the right contest.
