The six-digit OTP has become one of the most familiar rituals of the internet. You enter your mobile number, wait for a text message, find the code and type it into another box. It takes seconds, but multiply those seconds across billions of digital transactions and authentication becomes a surprisingly large source of friction.

Now, telecom operators want to make that ritual disappear.

The idea is SIM-based Number Verification, a form of mobile number verification that uses the SIM card and mobile network to establish that a particular phone number belongs to the SIM in a device. Instead of asking users to manually enter an OTP, the network can verify the number in the background.

For consumers, this could mean fewer OTPs. For businesses, it could mean faster and more seamless customer authentication. For telecom operators, however, the opportunity is potentially much bigger: a new authentication revenue stream built on infrastructure they already own.

Infobip, the global AI-first cloud communications platform, has launched its SIM-based Number Verification solution to connect telecom operators with enterprise demand for network-based authentication. The company says its Network API aggregation can help mobile network operators commercialise their authentication capabilities while giving enterprises access to operator-grade verification through a single integration.

“Operators already own one of the most trusted assets in digital identity, the SIM and the network authentication process,” says Matija Ražem, Chief Commercial Telecom Officer at Infobip. “Our role is to help operators commercialize that capability faster while giving enterprises a scalable path toward more secure and seamless authentication.”

What is SIM-based Number Verification?

SIM-based Number Verification is an authentication method that verifies whether a mobile phone number is associated with the SIM card in the device, using the mobile network rather than requiring the user to enter a one-time password.

The technology essentially takes something that telecom networks already do and makes it available as a service to businesses.

The SIM acts as the trust anchor. The mobile network can cryptographically verify the relationship between the SIM, the device and the associated phone number. This can allow an enterprise to authenticate a customer without relying solely on SMS-based OTP authentication.

The difference may sound technical, but the consumer experience is simple: less typing, less waiting and potentially fewer opportunities for OTP-related fraud.

Unlike older network-based verification approaches, SIM-based Number Verification can also support consent and token-based authentication flows and is designed to work across cellular and Wi-Fi environments.

That makes it part of a broader transition in digital identity: authentication is moving from something consumers actively perform to something that increasingly happens in the background.

Is OTP authentication becoming obsolete?

Not yet. OTPs remain deeply embedded across banking, fintech, ecommerce, social media and other digital services.

But their limitations are becoming harder to ignore.

SMS OTPs can be delayed or fail to arrive. Users can enter codes incorrectly. Fraudsters can use phishing to trick consumers into revealing them. SIM-swap attacks can also create additional security risks. At the same time, businesses bear the cost of sending authentication messages and dealing with failed or abandoned verification attempts.

SIM-based authentication approaches the problem differently.

Instead of asking, “Can this person type the code we sent?”, the network can help answer a more fundamental question: “Is this mobile number actually associated with the SIM in this device?”

That distinction could become increasingly important as businesses look for alternatives to traditional OTP authentication.

“Authentication is becoming a much bigger part of the overall customer experience, not just a security checkpoint,” says Leonardo Silva, Head of B2B Messaging and Open Gateway at Vivo.

“SIM-based Number Verification creates an opportunity to reduce friction for users while strengthening trust in mobile authentication,” he adds. “By removing the need for one-time passwords and leveraging the trust already built into the SIM and mobile network, enterprises can deliver more seamless and secure digital experiences at scale.”

Why telecom operators want to monetise authentication

For decades, telecom operators have primarily monetised connectivity. Consumers pay for calls, data and messaging, while enterprises pay for connectivity, communications and related services.

But the network contains another valuable asset: identity.

Every SIM connected to a mobile network has already gone through an authentication process. Telecom operators therefore possess infrastructure that can potentially be used to verify subscribers for other digital services.

The emergence of Network APIs is opening a way to expose those capabilities to businesses.

Instead of treating the mobile network as merely a pipe through which data travels, operators can sell specific network capabilities to enterprises. Number verification is one such capability.

This creates an interesting new business model.

An operator can potentially earn revenue when its network is used to authenticate a customer. An enterprise, meanwhile, gets access to mobile network authentication without having to build individual integrations with multiple telecom operators.

This is why the future of digital identity is increasingly focused on reducing authentication friction without compromising security.

Could your SIM become your digital identity?

The SIM card has traditionally been viewed as a gateway to a mobile network. Increasingly, it is becoming something more: a digital identity signal.

That does not mean the SIM will replace passwords, biometrics or other forms of multi-factor authentication. High-risk transactions will continue to require stronger security controls, and SIM-related threats such as SIM swapping will remain important considerations.

Passwords gave way to OTPs because consumers did not have to remember another password. Biometrics reduced the need to type or receive codes. The new telecom business is not just connectivity

The bigger question is whether authentication can become a meaningful revenue stream for telecom operators.

The opportunity rests on a simple economic proposition. Operators have already invested billions in building and maintaining mobile networks. If those networks can be used to provide trusted digital identity services, they can potentially generate additional revenue from the same infrastructure.

The challenge will be scale.

SIM-based Number Verification needs broad operator coverage to become truly useful to global enterprises. Businesses do not want a verification system that works for some customers but requires a different process for everyone else.

That is where aggregation becomes important. By connecting multiple operators and enterprises, platforms such as Infobip can potentially make network-based authentication easier to deploy across markets.

The technology therefore represents more than another alternative to SMS OTP.

It is part of the telecom industry's larger attempt to turn the network itself into a platform.

And the SIM may be at the centre of that transformation.
