A Tradition Built on Respect

Speaking about the motivation behind the practice, one supporter said, “That's the culture. But it's like respect for everything. Respect for the players, supporters and also for the stadium. We are honoured to be here, so we don't want to make a mess and then leave it. So I think that's the reason why we are doing it.”

The act of cleaning stadiums after matches has become a hallmark of Japanese supporters at major international sporting events, including FIFA World Cups and Olympic Games.

According to ESPN, the tradition first gained widespread international recognition during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. Despite Japan being eliminated during the group stage, supporters were seen collecting rubbish after matches, earning widespread praise for their civic-minded behaviour.

A Familiar Sight at Global Tournaments

Since then, Japanese fans have continued the practice at sporting events across the world. One of the most memorable examples came during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, when supporters cleaned their section of Khalifa International Stadium after celebrating Japan's stunning 2-1 victory over Germany.

The gesture has since become one of the most admired traditions in international sport, regularly drawing attention for its emphasis on respect, responsibility and community spirit.

Japan Fight Back for Valuable Point

The heartwarming scenes in the stands followed an entertaining contest on the pitch between Japan and the Netherlands.

The Dutch took the lead early in the second half through Virgil van Dijk, but Japan responded when Nakamura found the equaliser. Crysencio Summerville restored the Netherlands' advantage in the 64th minute before Daichi Kamada struck dramatically in the 88th minute to secure a 2-2 draw.

The result leaves both sides level on one point in Group F. Yet while the teams shared the spoils on the field, Japan's supporters once again emerged as some of the tournament's most talked-about figures, earning admiration for a tradition that continues to inspire football fans worldwide.
