As speculation grows over whether Rohit Sharma's ODI at Lord's could be his final international appearance, former India captain Kapil Dev has urged fans to celebrate the Indian skipper's illustrious career rather than mourn his retirement. Speaking in Noida on Saturday, Kapil said every great cricketer eventually moves on, and Rohit's contribution to Indian and world cricket deserves appreciation.

'Why sad? Celebrate what Rohit has achieved'

Responding to questions about the retirement speculation, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain dismissed the idea that fans should view Rohit's departure with sadness.

"No, let's say happy. Why sad? He has given us so much happiness over the years. Everybody has to go. Sunil Gavaskar gone, Rahul gone, Anil Kumble gone, Sachin gone. Everybody has to go," Kapil told ANI.

He said Rohit's legacy should be remembered for the joy and entertainment he has provided throughout his career.

"So when he goes, we should celebrate his life. What a happiness, how much entertainment he has given to the country, not only to the country, but also around the world. We should be happy, why sad?" he said.

Kapil hopes Rohit signs off with a century

Kapil also wished for the Indian captain to enjoy a memorable farewell whenever he decides to step away from international cricket.

"Yes, he has to go one day. I hope if he's going, he should get a hundred and go," he added.

Rohit, 39, made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast on June 23, 2007, and has already retired from both the T20I and Test formats.

Speculation surrounding his ODI future has intensified during India's ongoing series in England, where the veteran opener has struggled for runs. Rohit has scored 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs, and has accumulated 241 runs in eight ODI matches this year at an average of 30.12, with a highest score of 79.
