A 6'5 fast bowler who began as a net bowler and went unplayed in IPL 2026 has just earned a maiden India call-up.
Gurnoor Brar's selection for the one-off Test and ODI series against Afghanistan is the product of years of quiet, consistent work far from the spotlight, and it has announced the arrival of one of Indian cricket's most exciting new pace prospects.
Gurnoor Brar is a young fast bowler from Punjab who made his first-class debut in 2022. Despite being part of the Gujarat Titans squad in IPL 2026, he has not played a single game this season. It was his sustained domestic performances that forced the selectors' hand.
At 6'5, Brar extracts a steep bounce that few Indian pacers can replicate. His height combined with genuine pace makes him particularly threatening in red-ball cricket. He claimed 33 wickets in 12 matches in the 2024-25 domestic season at an economy rate of 3.43.
The numbers are hard to ignore. Brar took 26 wickets in 7 matches during the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, including a five-wicket haul against Bihar where he took 5 wickets for just 14 runs. He then carried that form into the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League, finishing as the top wicket-taker with 22 wickets in 11 matches.

Brar's rise has a neat full-circle quality. He reportedly told Times of India that Gill spotted him during Under-19 days and helped him get into the Mohali district team, setting him on the path from Punjab Under-23 cricket to a national call-up under the very captain who gave him his first real break.
Brar began as a net bowler for Mumbai Indians in 2019 before making his playing debut for Punjab Kings in 2023. In the 2025 IPL auction, Gujarat Titans bought him for Rs 1.3 crore, rewarding his domestic consistency.
Brar fills a specific gap in India's pace attack. His height and bounce offer a different challenge compared to skiddier options already in the system. The Afghanistan series is the next logical step for a bowler who has earned every opportunity through sheer volume of wickets.
