Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled to find rhythm this season, with their batting unit showing no signs of settling.

The reluctance to promote Rinku higher up the order has emerged as a key talking point, especially with none of the middle-order batters managing to secure the position.

In India’s well-rounded T20I line-up, Rinku has carved out a defined role. With batters equipped to take down spin, he is used as a late-innings enforcer tasked with maximising impact in brief appearances.

That clarity, however, appears less certain at franchise level. Still the only team without a win after five matches, KKR endured another difficult defeat against Gujarat Titans on Friday.

Skipper Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for zero in the first over, Angkrish Raghuvanshi continued to struggle at No 3, and Tim Siefert, replacing Finn Allen at the top, also fell early.

Can Rinku Singh evolve beyond a finisher for Kolkata Knight Riders?

Despite the early setbacks in the powerplay, there was no move to promote Rinku.

KKR require more than brief cameos from Rinku. He remains the only current India T20I batter in the squad, and expectations are higher for him to contribute across different phases of the innings.

The franchise did attempt to expand his role earlier this season, placing him at No 5 in the first four matches.

He walked in at 79 for 3, 105 for 3, 74 for 3 and 145 for 3 in those games but struggled to accelerate.

He was contained by Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmed in Chennai, managed only singles and dots against Mohammed Shami and Avesh Khan against Lucknow Super Giants, and could not find enough boundaries against Mumbai Indians.

Do Rinku Singh’s numbers justify KKR’s strategy of using him only as a finisher?

His unbeaten 33 in that match included four fours and came at a strike rate of 157.14 on a high-scoring evening.

KKR’s hesitation appears rooted in match-ups and entry points. Since IPL 2023, Rinku has a strike rate of 167 against pace with a boundary percentage close to 70%.

Against spin, that strike rate drops to 122. His effectiveness peaks at the death, where he strikes at 226 in the last five overs.

That number falls to 135 when he bats in the first half of the innings and rises only slightly to 139 in overs 11 to 15.

These numbers suggest a preference to preserve him for the closing stages. However, the strategy has not yielded the desired results so far.

For a batter known for his temperament and with a first-class average of 59.30, there is a growing sense that he must take on greater responsibility to lift KKR out of their current slump.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag won the toss on Sunday and opted to bat first against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
