Kolkata Knight Riders’ struggles in the ongoing IPL season continued unabated as they slumped to another defeat, this time against Chennai Super Kings, leaving them winless after five matches and anchored to the bottom of the table.
Despite the result, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane found positives in his side’s bowling effort, particularly after a challenging start in the powerplay.
"I thought with the ball, we were treated really well. 190 on this wicket was really good, especially the power play, what they got, 70-odd runs. After that, pulling back to 190 was an amazing job from our bowling unit,” Rahane said after the match.
Chennai Super Kings managed to post 192 on what Rahane described as a good batting surface.
KKR’s bowlers recovered well after conceding heavily early on, but the effort ultimately proved insufficient as the batting unit failed to deliver.
The numbers underline the depth of KKR’s problems. The franchise is yet to register a win in five outings.
Their only point came from a washed-out game against Punjab Kings rather than a completed contest.
Rahane pointed to a lack of momentum with the bat, highlighting a slow powerplay and struggles against spin as key factors behind the latest defeat.

And the price of surviving it
For a side that has won three IPL titles, the ongoing slump reflects deeper concerns about form and balance.
Rahane acknowledged that persisting with a settled combination has become increasingly difficult amid a string of losses.
A major concern has been the underwhelming performances of key players. Cameron Green, acquired for Rs 25.20 crore, has struggled to justify his price tag.
His limited contribution with both bat and ball has left a noticeable gap in the side’s balance.
Similarly, Rinku Singh has not been able to replicate his previous impact as a finisher.
Once known for his fearless hitting, including a memorable sequence of five consecutive sixes against Yash Dayal, his strike rate has dipped in 2026 and his confidence appears to be waning.
Rahane emphasised the need for unity and clarity going forward, stating that the team must stay positive, focus on simple execution, and review combinations in the dressing room if necessary.
He also noted that consistency in selection can only be sustained when results follow.
Whether Rahane’s calm and composed nature will help KKR turn their troubles onto their opponents is something the Purple Army fans will be keenly watching in a season that has so far been nothing but disappointing.
