Kolkata Knight Riders face mounting pressure ahead of their game against Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens on Monday, with the two sides arriving at the contest on starkly different trajectories.
While Punjab Kings have carried forward the momentum of their runners-up finish last season, Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled to find their footing, losing their first two matches in the IPL 2026.
The contrast has only heightened the stakes for Ajinkya Rahane’s side, who are yet to open their account this season.
KKR’s dip in form traces back to the previous edition, where they lost their last two games and finished eighth.
A revamp ahead of IPL 2026 was expected to turn things around, but successive defeats have left the Knights under early pressure.
In contrast, PBKS retained 21 players from their 2025 squad and have begun this season with two convincing victories, with multiple players contributing across departments.
Punjab’s resurgence has been driven in part by a strong top order. Their top four has looked particularly solid, with Australian recruit Cooper Connolly settling in seamlessly at No. 3.

The War on Energy Security
On the other hand, KKR’s big-money Australian allrounder in the top four is yet to make an impact.
The disparity extends to the bowling units as well. Punjab Kings have a near full-strength attack and appear one of the most balanced sides in the competition.
Kolkata, however, have been hampered by injuries and their bowlers have conceded more than 220 runs in both matches so far. Their lead spinner Varun Chakravarthy has struggled to maintain control.
Weather could also play a decisive role. Persistent rain until early evening on Sunday forced both teams to cancel their pre-match training sessions, and showers are forecast for Monday evening.
A washout could disrupt Punjab’s rhythm more significantly, given their winning start with victories over Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings.
There is an added subplot to the contest, with Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer returning to face his former franchise.
Iyer, who led KKR to the title two seasons ago, is well acquainted with both the Eden Gardens conditions and several players in the current KKR setup.
His record at the venue further strengthens Punjab’s position. Shreyas has led KKR in nine matches at Eden Gardens, winning six.
If Kolkata fail to address their concerns, particularly in the Powerplay against Punjab’s aggressive opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, Iyer could improve that record further, a prospect the Knights would be keen to avoid.
With confidence running high in the Punjab camp and uncertainty surrounding Kolkata’s bowling, the match presents a crucial early test for both sides in the tournament.
