Uttar Pradesh Hockey’s steady rise at the national level is not a coincidence but the result of a deeply embedded grassroots system that is now delivering consistent results across age groups. The latest milestone came when the state’s Sub Junior Men’s team clinched gold at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Men’s National Championship 2026 in Rajgir, Bihar, reinforcing the strength of its talent pipeline.
Over the past 16 years, Uttar Pradesh has accumulated 21 medals at the Hockey India National Championships across categories. What stands out is the acceleration in recent years, with 15 of those medals coming since 2021, highlighting a system that is not just stable but rapidly improving.
At the heart of this rise is a structured development model built around district-level scouting, competitive tournaments, and academy-based training. This system ensures that talent is identified early and nurtured through a clear pathway to higher levels.
The Sub Junior Men’s team alone has won eight medals since 2018, including four golds, two silvers, and two bronzes. The Sub Junior Women’s side has also contributed with three bronze medals, while the Junior Men’s and Women’s teams have steadily added to the tally. Even at the senior level, the men’s team has shown consistent progress with medals across multiple years.

And the price of surviving it
This layered success across categories reflects a system that is not dependent on one generation but continuously produces talent.
The expansion of hockey infrastructure has played a crucial role in this transformation. More than 15 astroturfs have been developed across cities like Lucknow, Jhansi, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, and Agra, bringing world-class facilities closer to aspiring players.
This widespread access has reduced regional disparities and allowed athletes from smaller towns to train on modern surfaces, which is essential for competing at national and international levels. With more astroturfs planned, the state aims to further strengthen this ecosystem.
The success of the grassroots system is best reflected in the number of players progressing to the international stage. Players like Lalit Upadhyay, an Arjuna Awardee and Olympic medallist, Raj Kumar Pal, Uttam Singh, and Mumtaz Khan have all emerged from this pipeline.
Young players such as Amir Ali, Sharda Nand Tiwari, Sourabh Anand, and Ajeet Yadav were also part of India’s third-place finish at the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025, underlining the depth of talent coming from the state.
Uttar Pradesh’s hockey culture is rooted in a rich legacy shaped by legends like Major Dhyan Chand, Kunwar Digvijay Singh, Mohammed Shahid, Ravinder Pal Singh, and Zafar Iqbal, all of whom contributed to India’s historic Olympic successes.
Icons like Zafar Iqbal continue to inspire the next generation. A former Chief National Coach, he recently received the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hockey India 8th Annual Awards 2025, symbolising the continuity between past excellence and present ambition.
Reflecting on the state’s journey, Uttar Pradesh Hockey President R.P. Singh said, "Our achievement of 21 medals over the past 16 years is a testament to the strength of our grassroots structure and the relentless efforts of our coaches, who ensure effective scouting and nurturing of talent at our high-performance academies. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Paul Devendar, Akram Mahmood, Upendra Chauhan, Chandan Singh, Ayush Dwivedi, Jitendra Singh Bhadauria, Shashi Navait, and many others, along with our General Secretary, Rajnish Mishra. Their expertise, commitment, and vision play a pivotal role in shaping raw talent into national champions, while proudly carrying forward the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand."
He added, "The Sub Junior Men's Gold in Rajgir exemplifies this development pathway, ensuring Uttar Pradesh fuels India's hockey future with depth, discipline, and dedication at every level. With plans to develop more astroturfs throughout the region, we want more players from Uttar Pradesh to represent the country."
