Norway's remarkable FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign has extended beyond the football pitch into mainstream digital culture, with Google introducing a special search animation inspired by the team's viral 'Viking Row' celebration whenever fans search for Erling Haaland's name.
Norway's tournament run has drawn worldwide attention thanks to the synchronised 'Viking Row' celebration, where supporters mimic rowing a Viking longboat. The celebration has spread rapidly across social media, with Haaland and captain Martin Odegaard regularly joining supporters after victories.
Acknowledging Google's tribute, Haaland posted on X, "One thing to do today... search my name on Google."
Searching for Haaland's name now displays a party-pop icon. Clicking it triggers animated figures wearing Viking-style horns and Norwegian flags performing the famous rowing celebration. Repeated clicks also play the rhythmic drums that build up to the collective chant of 'Ro!'
Norway, appearing in their first-ever FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, will face England on July 12 at 2:30 AM IST. Their memorable campaign has included a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil, with Manchester City striker Haaland scoring seven goals—just one behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.

The craze for a perfect look is reshaping masculinity
Haaland's influence has also extended into music during the World Cup after Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo released a remix of the striker's old rap track, Kygo jo.
Before becoming one of world football's most prolific goalscorers with Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City, Haaland briefly ventured into music alongside Norway Under-17 teammates Erik Botheim and Erik Tobias Sandberg under the name 'Flow Kingz'.
The trio originally released Kygo jo in 2016 while Haaland was playing for Norwegian club Bryne. Norway's historic World Cup campaign has revived interest in the song, which has now amassed 8.9 million YouTube views.
Speaking during his first Manchester City interview in 2022, Haaland had recalled, "It is a group of three. One guy - Erik Botheim - and Erik Tobias as well, we are good friends. We were a bit bored, so we decided to make a rap song!"
Kygo had promised to release the remix if Norway defeated Brazil in the Round of 16. After Haaland's brace inspired the 2-1 victory, the producer fulfilled that promise.
Sharing the remix on Instagram, Haaland wrote, "Made it moment! Thanks, @kygomusic. Does this mean I'm officially an artist now?"
Norway's quarterfinal clash against England in Miami will pit Haaland against England captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham as the Scandinavian side looks to continue its dream run.
Haaland's two goals against Brazil took his World Cup tally to seven, equalling the highest goal total by a player in his debut FIFA World Cup since Poland's Grzegorz Lato scored seven goals in 1974.
The Norwegian striker has also been remarkably efficient in front of goal. He is averaging one goal every 14 touches—the best ratio among players with at least three goals in a single World Cup over the past six decades.
His finishing has been equally clinical, converting seven goals from just 18 shots for a 39 per cent conversion rate, the best efficiency by a player with at least 15 shots in a World Cup since Gary Lineker scored six goals from 15 attempts at the 1986 tournament.
Norway's victory over Brazil also extended another remarkable statistic. The Scandinavian nation remains the only one among the 91 countries Brazil have faced that the five-time world champions have never beaten, with Norway holding a record of two draws and three wins in five meetings.
