England captain Ben Stokes has described the aftermath of his side’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia as the “hardest period of his captaincy journey”, while vowing to restore “happiness and a sense of pride” among supporters during the upcoming home Test summer.
The 34-year-old took to social media with an open letter after confirmation that he, head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key would continue in their roles despite the heavy loss away from home.
Stokes and McCullum had earlier reshaped England’s batting philosophy with an aggressive and positive ‘Bazball’ approach, keeping the Ashes contests at home and away in mind.
However, the results did not follow. England drew the 2023 home series 2-2 before suffering a 1-4 defeat in Australia.
While the home series offered several positives, England’s batting approach appeared vulnerable in Australian conditions even with Australia missing key pacers such as Pat Cummins for most of the series and Josh Hazlewood entirely.
The tour was marred by poor planning, underwhelming performances and off-field issues, including concerns around alcohol consumption.
There were also mixed messages from the leadership group during the series.

The making of a summer thriller
Stokes publicly urged the team to respond under pressure, while McCullum continued to back the attacking philosophy, calling for greater conviction.
The contrast prompted Key to deny reports of any rift between the captain and coach.
Despite the disappointing outcome, the England and Wales Cricket Board chose to retain the existing leadership following a review.
In his Instagram post, Stokes expressed his commitment to the group and the road ahead, alongside McCullum and Key.
"The last three months has without a doubt been the hardest period of my captaincy journey, it's tested me in so many different ways and I'm sure every other captain has gone through this as well,” he added.
"We are going to give you everything we have, we know we made mistakes along the way, and we have learnt from those mistakes, you learn more from failure than success," he said.
Stokes has been out of action since sustaining a groin injury during the fifth Test in Sydney in January.
He is expected to return for Durham in the County Championship next month, with focus then shifting to England’s home summer beginning with a three-match Test series against New Zealand in June, followed by fixtures against Pakistan in August and September.
"We all appreciate every single person who supports us. We do what we do for many reasons, but one of those reasons is to bring our supporters and fans happiness and a sense of pride, and we will aim to do those things as much as we can in the future,” Stokes said.
“See you all in June for the start of the Test Match summer," he added.
