In the wake of India promising to offer proof of Pakistani involvement in the Pahalgam carnage, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday urged the global watchdogs such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take a more active role in monitoring Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal because it is an irresponsible and rogue state.
Speaking from Srinagar after reviewing the security situation in the Valley which was hit by a terror strike on April 22, Singh said, “The world cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to nuclear security in our region … We believe international watchdogs have a moral responsibility to ensure that nuclear weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.”
Singh said that the whole world has seen how irresponsibly Pakistan has threatened India. “Today, from the land of Srinagar, I want to raise this question whether nuclear weapons are safe in the hands of such an irresponsible and rogue nation.” Rajnath Singh made his comments while addressing soldiers in Srinagar’s Badami Bagh Cantonment.
Meanwhile, Indian officials were in New York to present evidence at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) implicating Pakistan-backed groups in the deadly Pahalgam terror attack after responding with Operation Sindoor, a counter-terrorism campaign that marked a decisive shift in India’s national security posture.
Sources in the Ministry of Defence suggest Singh’s visit is not only a morale boost for troops stationed in sensitive forward areas but also a signal of India’s resolve to maintain internal stability in the face of what it views as an increasingly emboldened militant network operating with Pakistani complicity.
“The situation is under control. Our Army is prepared for any eventuality,” Singh told reporters after his meeting with commanders in the region.
New Delhi is preparing to escalate the matter diplomatically, too, following Operation Sindoor. At the UNSC, Indian representatives are expected to present a dossier containing what officials claim is “irrefutable evidence” of TRF’s role in the Pahalgam attack. The dossier reportedly includes intercepted communications, satellite imagery, and financial records tracing logistical support for the attack back to handlers across the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian approach towards Pakistan blends muscular military power with proactive international engagement.
