Prashant Kishor Pulls Off Stunning Upset, Wins BJP Bastion Bankipur in First Electoral Victory

Prashant Kishor has finally crossed the line he spent years helping others reach.

The Jan Suraaj founder on Monday won the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by 19,324 votes after securing 64,151 votes. It is the first electoral victory of Kishor's political career and one of the biggest upsets in Bihar politics in recent years.

The significance goes well beyond a bypoll.

For more than two decades, Bankipur had been one of the BJP's safest urban constituencies. The seat was vacated after former BJP MLA Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha. In the 2025 Assembly election, Nabin had retained it by a margin of more than 50,000 votes, underscoring the party's dominance in the constituency.

Even before the final result was declared, the BJP had all but acknowledged defeat.

Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi congratulated Kishor and said the party would review the reasons behind its performance.

"We have consistently worked for the development of Bankipur and will continue to do so. We will review why we received fewer votes. I also congratulate the winning candidate in advance," Saraogi said while counting was still underway.

As the result became official, celebrations erupted across Patna. Jan Suraaj workers danced to drumbeats, smeared each other with green gulal and hailed the verdict as the arrival of an alternative political force in Bihar.

For Kishor, the victory marks a defining milestone.

After spending nearly two decades as one of India's most influential election strategists, he entered active politics by launching the Jan Suraaj Party, promising a grassroots alternative focused on governance, education and employment. The party failed to open its account in its Assembly election debut last year, making the Bankipur triumph even more significant.

The bypoll was also the first electoral test for the BJP-led coalition after Samrat Choudhary took over as Bihar Chief Minister from Nitish Kumar.

For Kishor, however, the verdict means something more personal. He has spent years scripting victories for others. Bankipur is the first one he can finally call his own.
