Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Malaysia began on a warm and symbolic note, as Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim personally received him at the airport and shared a car ride, reflecting the growing trust and friendship between the two leaders.
A Gesture That Spoke of Friendship
PM Modi was deeply touched by the special welcome extended by his Malaysian counterpart, who personally received him at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and accompanied him in his own car to a community programme.
Sharing moments from the journey on social media, Modi described the gesture as a celebration of the strong people-to-people bond between India and Malaysia. Later, addressing the Indian diaspora, he said that Anwar Ibrahim’s actions reflected his “love and respect for India,” calling it a rare and meaningful diplomatic gesture.
Modi highlighted that not only did the Malaysian leader share his vehicle, but also offered him his own seat, underscoring the warmth of their relationship and mutual admiration.
Cultural Welcome and Diaspora Connect
Following his arrival, the Prime Minister received a vibrant cultural welcome showcasing the shared heritage of both nations. He was also greeted by senior Malaysian ministers, reflecting the importance attached to his visit.
Modi attended the ‘Selamat Datang Modiji’ community event in Kuala Lumpur, where the Indian diaspora organised a grand cultural programme. Around 800 dancers performed a unified routine in an attempt to enter the Malaysia Book of Records, symbolising India’s soft power and cultural outreach.

Addressing the gathering, Modi thanked Anwar Ibrahim for joining the celebrations and praised his remarks on the future of India-Malaysia relations. He also recalled his earlier commitment to visit Malaysia after missing the ASEAN Summit last year, calling this trip his first foreign visit of 2026.
Strengthening a Strategic Partnership
The visit marks Prime Minister Modi’s third trip to Malaysia since 2015 and aims to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2024. Malaysia remains a key partner in India’s Act East Policy, Indo-Pacific vision, and Vision MAHASAGAR.
During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Ibrahim and participate in multiple engagements to enhance cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people sectors.
Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs said the visit is expected to impart fresh momentum to the multi-faceted relationship between the two countries.
A Pattern of Personal Diplomacy
This is not the first time Prime Minister Modi has shared a car ride with world leaders, reflecting his preference for personal diplomacy. In recent years, he has extended similar gestures to leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Such moments, analysts say, help build trust beyond formal protocols and strengthen long-term diplomatic relationships.
