Prashant Kishor Poised to Pull Off Stunning Upset in BJP Stronghold Bankipur

Prashant Kishor appears set for the biggest electoral breakthrough of his political career.

The Jan Suraaj founder is leading the prestigious Bankipur Assembly bypoll by 18,964 votes over BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar after 29 of 31 rounds of counting, putting him on course to wrest a constituency long considered one of the BJP's safest strongholds in Bihar.

In a significant acknowledgment of the trend, Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi congratulated Kishor even before the final result was declared.

"We have consistently worked for the development of Bankipur, and we will continue to do so. We will review why we received fewer votes. I also congratulate the winning candidate in advance," Saraogi said.

The result carries symbolic weight.

The bypoll was necessitated after former Bankipur MLA Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. In the 2025 Assembly election, Nabin had retained the constituency by a margin of more than 50,000 votes, underscoring the BJP's dominance in the seat.

As counting progressed, celebrations erupted outside counting centres and Jan Suraaj offices in Patna. Supporters danced to drumbeats, smeared each other with green gulal and hailed what they called the beginning of a new chapter in Bihar politics.

For Kishor, the result would mark his first major electoral success after transitioning from one of India's most sought-after political strategists to a full-time politician.

He launched the Jan Suraaj Party promising an alternative political platform centred on grassroots governance, education and employment. The party, however, failed to win a single seat in its Assembly election debut last year.

A victory in Bankipur would therefore represent more than a bypoll win. It would provide Kishor with his first significant electoral endorsement and potentially strengthen Jan Suraaj's position ahead of Bihar's evolving political landscape.

The bypoll is also the first electoral test for the BJP-led coalition after Samrat Choudhary took over as Bihar Chief Minister from Nitish Kumar, adding further political significance to the outcome.
