The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has strengthened its position on the global academic stage, securing the 118th rank in the QS World University Rankings (QSWUR) 2027. The achievement not only makes IIT Delhi the highest-ranked Indian institution once again but also matches the best-ever position attained by any Indian institution in the history of the rankings.

The latest rankings, announced on June 18, show IIT Delhi improving by five places from its 123rd position in the previous edition, continuing a steady upward trajectory that has seen the institute make significant gains over the past few years.

The QS World University Rankings are among the most closely watched global higher education rankings, assessing universities across multiple indicators including academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact, internationalisation and graduate outcomes.

In the 2027 edition, IIT Delhi emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution, reinforcing its reputation as one of the country's leading centres for higher education, research and innovation. The institute noted that its 118th-place finish equals the highest global ranking ever achieved by an Indian institution in the QS rankings.

The improvement is part of a broader trend. Over the last four years, IIT Delhi has climbed 79 places, moving from 197th in the QS World University Rankings 2024 to 118th in 2027.

Which Indicators Helped IIT Delhi Improve?

A major contributor to IIT Delhi's rise was its stronger performance in employer-focused metrics.

The institute's Employer Reputation ranking improved by 11 places to reach 39th globally. This indicator measures how employers around the world perceive graduates from an institution and evaluates whether universities are producing professionals who are ready to contribute effectively in the workplace.

IIT Delhi also recorded one of its biggest gains in the Employment Outcomes indicator, jumping 60 positions. This metric assesses how effectively an institution enhances graduate employability and helps develop future leaders.

Research impact also played a key role. In the Citations per Faculty indicator, IIT Delhi improved by 26 places. The measure evaluates the average number of research citations received per faculty member and is widely regarded as an indicator of the quality, influence and reach of an institution's scientific output.

Focus on Education, Infrastructure and Global Engagement

Commenting on the achievement, Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean, Planning, and Head, Ranking Cell, IIT Delhi, stressed that rankings are a consequence of broader institutional goals rather than the primary objective.

"IIT Delhi remains committed to the goal of providing world-class, affordable technological education and becoming a preferred destination for scholars worldwide. Our revamped curriculum, new infrastructure, and increased international engagement will enhance our quality and impact in the coming years. We see rankings as an outcome, not an objective. If we do the right things for the right reasons, rankings will follow naturally," he said.

The institute believes that investments in curriculum reforms, infrastructure expansion and international collaborations are helping strengthen its global standing while enhancing the quality of education and research.

Strong Performance Across Engineering Disciplines

The latest ranking success follows another strong showing earlier this year in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

Several IIT Delhi disciplines registered notable performances, with Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering all featuring among the world's top 50 subjects.

The institute also secured the 36th position globally in the Engineering and Technology category, maintaining its status as the highest-ranked Indian institution in that discipline.

These results highlight IIT Delhi's growing international reputation not only as a leading engineering institution in India but also as a globally competitive centre for technological education, research and innovation.

What the Ranking Means for IIT Delhi

The latest QS ranking reflects IIT Delhi's continued progress in areas that increasingly shape global university assessments, including graduate employability, research quality and international engagement.

While the institute has emphasised that rankings are not its primary goal, the steady rise from 197th in 2024 to 118th in 2027 suggests that its long-term investments in academic excellence, research output and global partnerships are translating into greater international recognition.

For Indian higher education, IIT Delhi's performance provides another indication of the growing visibility of Indian institutions on the global academic map, particularly in science, engineering and technology.
