Dog joins monks for a football match in Spiti, and the internet can’t get enough

The Himalayas have no shortage of spectacular sights. Snow-dusted peaks, ancient monasteries, prayer flags fluttering in the wind.

But every once in a while, something much simpler steals the scene.

A football. A bunch of young monks. And one very enthusiastic dog who apparently decided that sitting on the sidelines was not an option.

A viral Instagram video shows a playful dog joining young monks for a football game at a monastery in Spiti Valley. As the players chase the ball across the ground, the canine newcomer darts after it too, weaving into the action and looking every bit like it has been waiting for its big sporting debut.

No jersey. No boots. No idea about the offside rule.

Just enthusiasm.

The dog may have found Spiti’s favourite game

Football is hardly an unusual sight among young monks in Spiti.

The remote Himalayan valley has a long-established monastic culture, with monasteries serving as important centres of religious education. The Himachal Pradesh government lists several major monasteries across the valley, including Key, Tabo, Dhankar, Tangyud and Kungri.

And there is evidence that football is already part of everyday life for younger monks.

MOST ProTibet, an organisation supporting monastery schools in Spiti, notes that young monks spend their limited free time playing games including football, volleyball and cricket.

Travel accounts have also captured young monks playing football around Key Monastery. One account described visitors joining a match with the monks, while another recorded seeing young monks playing football near the monastery.

So perhaps the dog did not exactly crash the match.

Perhaps it simply knew where the fun was.

In Spiti, even a football match feels cinematic

There is something wonderfully incongruous about the scene.

Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert, surrounded by stark mountains and dotted with centuries-old Buddhist monasteries. Himachal Pradesh Tourism describes the valley as a place where Buddhism remains deeply woven into everyday life.

And then comes this tiny burst of chaos: a dog chasing a football alongside young monks.

For a few seconds, the robes, rituals and towering Himalayan landscape fade into the background.

There is only the ball.

And one very determined player who has four legs.
