They had finished the work. The paddy transplantation was done. The labourers were on their way home to Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh after working in the Gwalior region. Then, sometime around 1 am, their journey ended in a mangled pickup on a highway in Bhind.

Eight labourers were killed and 32 others injured after the pickup carrying the workers collided head-on with a truck near Chhimka village on National Highway-719, police said. Five died at the spot. Three others succumbed to their injuries while being taken for treatment.

The injured were first taken to a hospital in Gohad. Those in serious condition were referred to Gwalior for further treatment. Police and local residents helped pull people from the wreckage after the crash.

They were simply trying to get home

The men were migrant workers from Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. They had travelled to the Dabra and Chinor areas of Gwalior for paddy transplantation work. After finishing the job, they began the journey back home. One injured worker told police that they had left Chinor at around 7 pm. A few hours later, their vehicle was involved in the collision.

That journey home would never be completed by eight of them.

What happened on the highway?

The exact circumstances are still being investigated. But preliminary police findings point to a possible sequence of events. According to Gohad Chauraha police station in-charge Ramnaresh Yadav, the pickup driver was apparently trying to avoid cattle sitting on the highway when he lost control. The vehicle then moved into the path of an oncoming dumper truck, resulting in the head-on collision.

The impact badly damaged the pickup and trapped several labourers inside. Police and local residents rushed to the scene and helped rescue those who could be pulled out. The investigation is continuing, and the precise cause of the crash will have to be established by authorities.

Eight lives lost. Dozens now in hospital. The numbers are stark. Eight dead. Around thirty-two injured. The injured include people who were travelling together after completing seasonal agricultural work in another part of Madhya Pradesh. Some suffered serious injuries and were shifted to Gwalior for treatment.

For migrant workers, the journey home after weeks of agricultural work is often simply another part of the job — another night on the road before returning to their families.

On this highway, that journey became a tragedy.

The road home

The crash has once again brought attention to the risks faced by workers who travel long distances in heavily loaded vehicles after seasonal work. But for now, the focus remains on those injured and on the families waiting for their loved ones. Eight families are mourning. Injured workers are recovering in hospitals.

And behind the headline is a much quieter tragedy: a group of men who had finished their work, started their journey home and never made it back.

They were on the road home. That road ended in Bhind.
