A son on a cliff, desperate parents and a devastating end: What police say happened in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

On a hill overlooking Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, police officers, firefighters, villagers and anxious parents spent nearly two hours trying to save one young man.

By the time the ordeal ended, three members of the same family were dead.

The tragedy unfolded at Khavda Hill in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district on August 21 and has since shocked the city. Initial reports suggested that an argument over a mobile phone may have triggered the incident. But investigators now say the story appears to be more complicated than a single family disagreement.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Pankaj Atulkar, preliminary findings indicate that the family had been dealing with significant stress and internal disputes for several months before the fatal incident.

What happened on Khavda Hill?

According to police accounts cited by ANI, 18-year-old Kunal reached the edge of a cliff at around noon and told those present that he intended to end his life.

Authorities responded quickly. Police personnel and the fire brigade rushed to the spot, while local residents also gathered nearby. For nearly one-and-a-half to two hours, officials attempted to persuade the teenager to step away from the edge.

The rescue effort appeared to be making progress. Then everything changed in seconds.

According to DCP Atulkar, Kunal's father attempted to grab him in an effort to pull him to safety. During the struggle, both lost balance and fell from the cliff.

Moments later, Kunal's mother also went over the edge.

All three died in the incident.

Was the tragedy really triggered by a mobile phone dispute?

That was the initial version that emerged shortly after the incident.

Senior police officials had earlier indicated that a quarrel between Kunal and his father over the use of a mobile phone may have preceded the events at the hilltop.

However, investigators now believe the argument may have been only the final flashpoint in a larger family situation.

According to DCP Atulkar, preliminary inquiries suggest that tensions within the household had been building for the past two to three months.

"Preliminary investigations reveal that there was a family dispute, which had created an atmosphere of stress in the household," the officer said while providing an update on the case.

Police are now examining the broader circumstances that may have contributed to the emotional distress within the family.

Why is the case drawing so much attention?

Partly because of the heartbreaking sequence of events.

Unlike many accident cases, this tragedy unfolded in full view of rescuers who were actively trying to prevent it.
