Ranbir Kapoor Birthday Special: From Rockstar to Animal, 5 times he disappeared into a character before Ramayana

What does Ranbir Kapoor look like when he stops looking like Ranbir Kapoor?

That has become one of the more interesting questions of his career. Since his 2007 debut in Saawariya, Kapoor has moved between romantic heroes, troubled dreamers, musicians, street fighters, biopic subjects and full-blown action characters. And sometimes, the transformation begins long before the first dialogue: with the hair, beard, body, clothes and even the way he carries himself.

On his birthday, as the actor prepares to step into perhaps his most visually recognisable role yet, that of Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, here are five times RK dramatically changed his look for a character.

1. Rockstar: When Ranbir Kapoor went from clean-cut Janardhan to wild-haired Jordan

Before Jordan became the tortured rockstar audiences remember, he was Janardhan: a slightly awkward college student with an innocent, almost deliberately ordinary appearance. Then came the transformation. For Rockstar, Ranbir's character evolves from the clean-cut Janardhan into the volatile musician Jordan. The visual change follows that emotional journey: longer hair, beard, edgier clothes and a more reckless physical presence.

The look was not simply about making Ranbir resemble a rockstar. It helped show the character falling apart as he became more famous. It remains one of those rare Bollywood transformations where the hairstyle almost tells the story by itself.

2. Bombay Velvet: When Ranbir Kapoor ditched the boy-next-door image for Johnny Balraj

If Rockstar changed Ranbir's hair, Bombay Velvet changed his entire silhouette. As Johnny Balraj, Ranbir played a street fighter in Anurag Kashyap's period drama set in Bombay. He appeared tougher, more rugged and physically built-up, with an intentionally distinctive hairstyle and a thin moustache. And Ranbir knew exactly why the change mattered.

In an interview with India Today, he said he wanted to break his existing image and do something drastic for Johnny. He specifically pointed to the hairstyle and moustache as elements that helped him feel different from himself. Johnny Balraj was not supposed to look like Ranbir Kapoor. That was precisely the point.

3. Sanju: When Ranbir Kapoor became Sanjay Dutt, across decades

Then came the transformation that made people look twice. For Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju, Ranbir wasn't merely playing Sanjay Dutt. He had to portray the actor at different stages of his life. That meant repeatedly changing his physical appearance: from the leaner young Sanjay to the bulkier version of Dutt seen later in life, along with changes in hair, facial hair and styling.

The transformation became one of the biggest talking points around the film even before its release. Hirani highlighted the physical similarities between a young Dutt and Ranbir as one reason the actor seemed like an intuitive fit for the role. The result was arguably the most literal example of Ranbir disappearing into another real-life person.

4. Rocket Singh: When Ranbir Kapoor swapped the romantic hero for a salesman

Before Rockstar gave Ranbir his wild-haired rockstar avatar, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year had already shown that the actor was willing to leave his familiar image behind. In Shimit Amin's 2009 film, Ranbir played Harpreet Singh Bedi, a young Sikh salesman who enters the corporate world fresh out of college. The transformation was immediately noticeable: Ranbir grew a full beard and appeared on screen in a turban, formal office wear and the understated styling of a young middle-class professional.

Ranbir revealed at the time that it took him five weeks to grow his beard, while the team experimented with different turbans to get the fabric, colour and length right. He even wore the turban during readings so that he could get accustomed to playing a Sardar rather than simply putting it on when the cameras started rolling.

5. Animal: Ranbir Kapoor's most extreme modern transformation before Ramayana

If there was one look that announced a completely new Ranbir Kapoor, it was Ranvijay Singh. For Animal, the actor appeared with long, messy hair, a thick beard and a significantly more muscular physique. The contrast was particularly striking because audiences had just seen him in the much cleaner-cut Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.

Behind the look was serious physical preparation. Videos shared by his fitness trainer showed Ranbir training extensively for the role, while reports from the film's production highlighted his long-haired, bearded appearance. There was even an interesting twist behind the hairstyle: hairstylist Aalim Hakim later revealed that director Sandeep Reddy Vanga initially had reservations about keeping Ranbir's hair long because he felt the look resembled Sanju. But the final Ranvijay look became inseparable from Animal.

And now, Ranbir Kapoor is becoming Ram

Which brings us to the transformation currently attracting the most attention. For Ramayana: Part One, Ranbir is stepping into the role of Lord Rama, with Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana and Yash as Ravana. New posters showed Ranbir as Ram during the vanvas portion of the story.

This time, the challenge is different. Johnny Balraj needed to look dangerous, whereas Jordan needed to look like a rockstar. On the other hand, Sanju needed to resemble a real person while Ranvijay needed physical menace.

Ram needs something else entirely: an instantly recognisable combination of dignity, restraint and epic scale. And that may make this Ranbir Kapoor's most closely watched transformation yet.

From Janardan to Jordan, Johnny to Sanju, Shamshera to Ranvijay: the actor has spent much of his career proving that changing a look can sometimes be the first step towards changing an identity. Now comes Ram. And this time, almost everyone already knows what the character is supposed to look like.
