Is Awarapan 3 Coming Soon? Emraan Hashmi Teases Fans After Sequel Opens Big

What happens when a character people thought they had said goodbye to, nearly 20 years ago, suddenly walks back into a cinema? Apparently, quite a lot. Actor Emraan Hashmi is back as Shivam Pandit in Awarapan 2, and the return has begun with a number that would have been difficult to imagine when the original film quietly arrived in 2007. The sequel collected approximately ₹27 crore worldwide on its opening day, according to trade reports cited by The Times of India and The Economic Times, making it the biggest opening of Hashmi's career.

And then, as if that weren't enough, Hashmi walked into a Mumbai theatre during promotions, faced the audience and dropped another little surprise. “Hopefully, Awarapan 3 very soon,” he said.

Suddenly, this isn't just about a sequel anymore.

Remember Shivam Pandit? You might. Or, if you watched Awarapan in 2007, you probably remember the music first. The brooding hero. The heartbreak. The violence. The melancholy. And, inevitably, songs such as “Toh Phir Aao”, which helped the film live far beyond its original theatrical run. Directed by Mohit Suri, the 2007 film starred Hashmi and Shriya Saran. It did not make a major impact at the box office when it was released, but gradually developed a strong cult following. That is the strange thing about cult films. Sometimes the audience arrives years later.

Now Shivam is back. Nearly two decades after the original, Awarapan 2 brings Hashmi back to the role. This time, Disha Patani joins him, while Shabana Azmi and Suvinder Vicky are also part of the cast. The sequel is directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt. And the opening suggests that the nostalgia wasn't confined to social media.

And then came the theatre moment. Hashmi and Disha Patani visited a Mumbai theatre while promoting the film and interacted with the audience. The actor thanked fans for bringing the franchise back into cinemas and told them the film now belonged to them. Then a fan predicted that Awarapan 2 would become a super-hit. Hashmi's response? Wait for the second half. “The movie is not over yet; the second half is better,” he told the audience. And then came the words that sent the crowd into another round of cheers: Awarapan 3.

Not an announcement. Not a confirmed green light. Just a tantalising hint. But when an actor says “hopefully” and a theatre full of fans hears it, you can be fairly sure the internet is going to do the rest.

Why does Awarapan still matter?

Because the first film never really disappeared. Its theatrical run may have been underwhelming, but the film found a second life through television, music and word of mouth. Over the years, Shivam Pandit became one of the roles most closely associated with Hashmi's more intense screen persona. The sequel is therefore attempting something tricky. It isn't simply introducing a new character. It is asking audiences to reconnect with an old one. And that comes with expectations.

The original was remembered for its emotional intensity and music as much as its action. The sequel has leaned into that memory, bringing back the Awarapan sound while expanding the story with a new cast and a larger action canvas.

From one cult film to a possible franchise. For now, the numbers are doing the talking. ₹27 crore on Day 1. Hashmi's biggest opener. And the actor is already talking about what could come next. But Awarapan 3 remains just that — a possibility. Hashmi's theatre comment is a tease, not an official confirmation of a third film. Still, there is something fitting about the way this story has unfolded. In 2007, Awarapan arrived, struggled at the box office and slowly found its audience. In 2026, its sequel has arrived to an audience that was already waiting. And somewhere between those two releases, Shivam Pandit stopped being just a film character. He became nostalgia.

Now the question is whether audiences are ready to follow him one more time. Shivam came back after 19 years. If Emraan Hashmi’s fans get their way, perhaps this isn't goodbye after all.
