Carrie Coon to Receive VIFF’s First Luminary Award for Acting

Carrie Coon will become the first recipient of the Vancouver International Film Festival’s new Luminary Award in the acting category, recognising excellence and dedication to the art of moving image, Variety reported.

The White Lotus actor will also participate in a wide-ranging conversation at the festival, where her upcoming film The Liberation is scheduled to be screened.

VIFF begins on October 1, bringing filmmakers, actors, producers and other industry professionals to Vancouver for screenings, talks, panels and masterclasses. The festival will also present Luminary Awards to Markus Schleinzer for directing excellence and Leah Nelson for screenwriting.

Conversations on Editing, Production and Design

The VIFF Talks programme opens on October 3 with editor Matthew Hannam, whose recent credits include Halina Reijn’s Babygirl and Noah Baumbach’s White Noise.

Hannam will discuss his approach to collaboration, drawing on a career that began as an assistant editor in Winnipeg, where he worked with filmmakers including Guy Maddin.

Producer Haley Johnson will discuss the making of Obsession on October 4. According to Variety, the independently produced film was made on a shoestring budget and went on to earn more than $500 million worldwide.

The conversation will examine its production and subsequent journey, including the studio bidding war that followed its Toronto premiere.

On October 5, production designers Brandon Tonner-Connolly and Matt Hyland will explore their collaboration on Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, focusing on the creation of its surreal, immersive world.

Film Music and Emerging Talent

The talks series concludes on October 7 with Mark Mothersbaugh, the DEVO co-founder whose composing credits include Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

The festival will also showcase its Composer Filmmaker Accelerator, which connects emerging composers with filmmakers through mentorship and practical collaboration.

Three-time Emmy-nominated composer Miriam Cutler, whose credits include RBG, Love Gilda and Lost in La Mancha, will curate the initiative. Its 2026 showcase is scheduled for October 8.

Other figures expected at VIFF include Rick Hansen, actor and School for Defectors producer Daniel Dae Kim, and Canadian directors Matthew Rankin, Marie Clements and Zach Lipovsky.
