India's EV Revolution Is Accelerating. Here's What's Driving the Surge

EV registrations climbed to 3,07,752 units in July, marking a 63.2% year-on-year increase and underscoring the country's rapidly expanding appetite for electric mobility, according to a report by JMK Research & Analytics.
While overall EV sales were broadly steady compared with June, the bigger story was the sharp jump from a year ago, signalling that electric mobility is moving beyond early adoption and becoming increasingly mainstream.
Electric two-wheelers remained the biggest driver of the market, accounting for more than 61% of all EV registrations. Passenger electric three-wheelers followed with a 23.7% share, while electric cars contributed just over 10%.
The passenger EV segment delivered one of the strongest performances of the month.

A raging generation makes the government relent. What's next?
Electric car registrations rose to 30,806 units, an 81% increase over July last year, even though they dipped slightly on a month-on-month basis. According to the report, the growth is being fuelled by a wider range of EV models, expanding charging infrastructure and rising consumer confidence. EV penetration in the passenger vehicle market also continued its upward trajectory, reaching 7.92% in July.
Electric three-wheelers maintained their momentum as well, with sales rising 22% year-on-year to 84,554 units. The segment continues to benefit from lower operating costs, improving financing options and growing commercial demand, pushing EV penetration in the category to 65.55%.
Regionally, Uttar Pradesh led the country with 47,062 EV registrations, followed by Maharashtra (36,642) and Karnataka (29,183). Together, the top 10 states accounted for nearly 77% of all EV registrations during the month, highlighting that India's electric mobility boom continues to be concentrated in key regional markets.
The latest numbers suggest India's EV ecosystem is strengthening steadily, with improving infrastructure, broader product choices and rising consumer acceptance helping drive one of the fastest-growing segments of the country's automobile market.
