A major security scare unfolded during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC, when a 31-year-old man allegedly stormed a security checkpoint at the venue.
Suspected gunshots were heard, triggering chaos inside the high-profile gathering attended by top US officials, including President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump.
Secret Service agents quickly responded, escorting Trump and other officials out of the venue as law enforcement moved to contain the threat.
According to CNN, the suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California.
Public records cited in the report indicate that Allen worked as both a teacher and a video game developer. A LinkedIn profile matching his identity described him as a part-time teacher at C2 Education, where he was named “teacher of the month” in December 2024.
Allen’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2017 and a master’s degree in computer science from California State University Dominguez Hills.
During his time at Caltech, he was featured in a 2017 local news report for developing a prototype emergency brake system for wheelchairs.

He also reportedly identified himself as a video game developer and released an independent game titled “Bohrdom” on Steam, priced at USD 1.99. He had registered a trademark for the game’s name in 2018. His LinkedIn profile further stated he was “currently developing a second game, working name ‘First Law’.”
CNN also reported that Allen donated USD 25 to the 2024 presidential campaign of Kamala Harris.
Authorities revealed that the suspect was heavily armed. Interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said the suspect carried a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
Carroll stated that the suspect “exchanged fire” with law enforcement officers before being subdued and taken into custody.
He added that authorities have “secured a room” linked to the suspect as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials confirmed that the suspect was not shot but was taken to a hospital for evaluation after the incident.
An injured Secret Service agent was also hospitalised, according to Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.
US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, said the suspect will be produced in court on Monday.
He faces charges of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Authorities currently believe the suspect acted alone.
