US President Donald Trump on Friday called for the resignation of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th District in the House of Representatives. He endorsed a Fox News Digital report that cited unnamed sources as saying Omar’s real name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.

TRUMP’S POST

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Omar had used a different name to get elected and sworn in, and said she had “openly admitted to FRAUD.” He repeated claims from the report about her family and said that, because she had used a “fake name,” he assumed she “must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress.” He also asked that House Speaker Mike Johnson be told the Democratic Party had “conceded her seat.”

OMAR’S OFFICE: ‘COMPLETELY FALSE’

The Somali-born Congresswoman’s office disputed the Fox report. “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” it told Fox News Digital.

Fox also reported that Jeanine Pirro, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, had filed a motion seeking to keep the federal search warrant for Omar’s home sealed. The motion refers to the Congresswoman as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, also known as Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.

THE OCTOBER 13 SEARCH

On October 13, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) searched Omar’s home in Washington, and the Justice Department confirmed the search was part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.

It centred on her immigration paperwork. Sources cited by Fox said the documents under review included paperwork completed by her late father when she was a child.

Omar’s office condemned the search at the time as “an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”

It said that for a decade Trump had “relentlessly targeted” her with inflammatory rhetoric, and that the Congresswoman “has done nothing wrong.” No president, it added, should be able to use federal power to intimidate political enemies.

With the US midterm elections approaching, pressure on Omar is mounting.
