QUICK TAKE | Why Has Joshua Wong Been Jailed for Another 10 Years? Seven Things to Know

1. What has happened to Joshua Wong?
A Hong Kong court sentenced the 30-year-old democracy activist to 10 years in prison on November 5. He had pleaded guilty in September to conspiring to collude with foreign forces under the national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020.
2. What was he accused of doing?
Prosecutors said Wong conspired with exiled activist Nathan Law and others to seek foreign sanctions, blockades or other hostile measures against China and Hong Kong. The alleged offences covered July to November 2020. Wong said he had never advocated Hong Kong independence or regime change in China.
3. Why was he already in prison?
Wong has been detained since November 2020 and has faced several protest-related cases. In November 2024, he received four years and eight months for conspiracy to commit subversion over an unofficial primary election. His expected January release related to those earlier sentences.
4. How did he become so prominent?
He co-founded the student group Scholarism at 14 and helped lead opposition to a proposed patriotic education curriculum in 2012. Two years later, he became an internationally recognised figure during the Umbrella Movement, which demanded greater democracy in Hong Kong’s electoral system.

5. What was Demosisto?
The political organisation Wong co-founded with Nathan Law and other young activists in 2016. It pursued democratic self-determination and international advocacy. The group disbanded on June 30, 2020, as the national security law came into effect. Its overseas lobbying featured prominently in the prosecution’s case.
6. Does the new sentence replace his earlier punishment?
It substantially extends his time behind bars. Only a small remaining portion of his existing sentence overlaps with the new term. Human Rights Watch says he now faces imprisonment until late 2036, when he will be 40, rather than release early next year.
7. Why is the case attracting international attention?
It concerns how national security legislation applies to political advocacy and contact with foreign governments. Human Rights Watch condemned the sentence as unjust. Hong Kong authorities maintain that prosecutions follow evidence and the law, while Beijing says the legislation restored stability after the protests.
