QUICK TAKE | Why Does Trump Want America to Stay on Summer Time? Seven Things to Know

1. What set Trump off?
After clocks went back on November 1, Donald Trump complained on Truth Social that the sun had set at 5:06 pm and it was dark by 5:31 pm. He urged the Senate to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which would keep most of the country on daylight saving time year-round.
2. What would the bill do to the clocks?
Most Americans move their clocks forward an hour in spring and back an hour in autumn. The House bill would keep the spring setting through winter. For people who keep the same work or school hours, that means more daylight after work or school and less before.
3. How different would a winter morning look?
In Maryland, the latest winter sunrise would shift from about 7:11 am to 8:11 am. Its earliest winter sunset would move from around 4:43 pm to 5:43 pm. The total daylight stays the same. The clock changes when people get to use it.

4. Why are lawmakers split?
Supporters say later sunsets give families more time outdoors after work and school and could help businesses that depend on evening activity. Opponents point to children waiting for buses and commuters travelling before sunrise. Permanent standard time would also end the clock changes while preserving earlier winter sunrises.
5. Would every state have to switch?
The bill allows states to keep standard time year-round. Hawaii and most of Arizona already do so under federal law. Those places already avoid the twice-yearly switch that Trump wants to end elsewhere.
6. Where is the bill now?
The House passed it 308–117 on July 14, with votes from both parties. The bill went to the Senate Commerce Committee the following day and still needs Senate approval.
7. Could Americans have to spring forward in winter?
Yes. The House version would take effect upon enactment. If it became law during standard time as written, clocks in places adopting the change could jump forward an hour before the usual March switch.
