A high-profile evening meant to celebrate journalism turned into a moment of alarm and urgency in Washington, as a security breach and shooting scare disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, prompting a swift and forceful response from law enforcement.
US President Donald Trump described the incident as both shocking and serious, revealing that an armed individual attempted to breach a security checkpoint at the venue and was quickly neutralised by security forces. The suspect, identified as a resident of California, was described by Trump as “sick.”
“That was very unexpected, but incredibly acted upon by the Secret Service and law enforcement... A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service. They acted very quickly and have just released, for purposes of transparency and clarity, I've ordered it to be put out... a tape showing the violence of this thug who attacked our Constitution, and also showing how quickly the Secret Service and law enforcement acted on our country's behalf,” he said.
Trump also confirmed that one officer was injured but survived due to protective gear. “One officer was shot, but saved... the vest did the job. I just spoke to the officer, and he's doing great,” he added.
Chaos unfolded inside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, as described by ANI Reporter Reena Bhardwaj, who witnessed the panic firsthand. “Just minutes ago, chaos erupted here in the ballroom at the Hilton in Washington. What I witnessed first-hand was a loud sound first. To my mind, it was probably clattering dishes. But within seconds, I saw the servers rushing in with their trays and trying to find a secure place to keep themselves safe. That’s when I thought that something was not right. The entire table took cover under the table... When I knew that it was safe now to get up, what I witnessed was security agents on the stage with long guns... The POTUS had been ushered out. One by one, all his cabinet members, including Scott Bessent, Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth, Witkoff, were all ushered out... The program is supposed to resume shortly, that’s what has been announced, but we still don’t have anything from the association,” she said.

Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were swiftly evacuated to a secure location.
Trump praised the swift action of law enforcement and the Secret Service, both during his press briefing and in a post on Truth Social, where he also shared CCTV footage of the suspect entering the venue.
“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
He also highlighted the coordinated response involving DC police and other agencies, noting how quickly the attacker was subdued and brought under control.
“You see the attacker in different positions, but you also see the attacker totally subdued and under control... We really had, again, some great work done by law enforcement,” he said.
Trump framed the incident as part of a broader pattern of threats, referencing earlier assassination attempts against him in Pennsylvania and Florida.
“This is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill in Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two years ago... and in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close,” he said.
In July 2024, Trump was shot during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was seen bleeding from his ear before being rushed away by Secret Service agents. Another incident occurred in February when an armed individual breached the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago and was shot dead by law enforcement.
Using the latest breach to push for stronger infrastructure, Trump renewed his call for a new ballroom at the White House, arguing it would provide enhanced security features.
“It’s not a particularly secure building, and I didn’t want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we’re planning at the White House,” Trump said during his news conference. “It’s actually a larger room, and it’s much more secure. It’s got drone-proof. It’s bulletproof glass. We need the ballroom. That’s why Secret Service, that’s why the military is demanding it,” he added.
