Mamdani Hails Abdul El-Sayed’s Michigan Senate Win: ‘Incredibly Exciting’

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani welcomed Abdul El-Sayed’s Michigan Senate victory on Wednesday, describing the result as “incredibly exciting” and saying its significance reached far beyond the candidate himself.
El-Sayed’s projected victory over Republican Mike Rogers will make him the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate. Speaking to reporters, Mamdani congratulated the Democrat and highlighted the hostility he had faced during the campaign.
“I haven't spoken to him yet. I'm sure he is quite busy. I've had the privilege of speaking to him in the past and I have to say that his election is one that means so much to so many,” Mamdani said.

The mayor pointed to both the financial opposition to El-Sayed’s candidacy and the personal attacks directed at him.
“To see that victory in the face of all that he had to reckon with over the course of that campaign, whether in terms of the extraordinary amount of money spent to oppose him or the racism and slander that he was met with on a daily basis, it is incredibly exciting to see,” he said.
Referring to El-Sayed’s election-night remarks, Mamdani added: “As he said last night, that the good guys won.”
El-Sayed had earlier addressed supporters in Michigan to celebrate his projected win, thanking voters for backing a candidacy he acknowledged had faced considerable obstacles.
“Michigan, we did it!” he declared. “You took a chance on the unlikeliest of candidates, so thank you.”
In his speech, El-Sayed linked attacks against him to the communities that supported his campaign. He argued that the election reflected a broader choice about who belonged in American public life.
“They want an America that is too small for some of us. We know that America is big enough for all of us,” he said.
The Michigan result came amid a wider Democratic resurgence in the 2026 midterm elections, with the party projected to take control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Those gains would put both chambers in opposition hands for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump’s term.
