Amid shifting global trade dynamics and unconventional diplomatic styles, India has emerged as a steady negotiator in its talks with the United States. According to former US official Raymond Vickery, India has avoided impulsive decision-making and focused instead on working through complex trade details methodically.
He noted that traditional trade agreements usually take over a year to finalise, with technical details negotiated first and formal announcements made later. In contrast, recent US approaches have often prioritised early declarations, followed by rushed efforts to fit policies into broad frameworks. Despite this, India has continued to pursue a structured timeline, aiming for a sustainable agreement rather than short-term political gains.
Vickery also stressed that both nations must coordinate carefully on sensitive issues such as Russian oil imports, warning that India’s long-standing strategic relationships cannot be altered overnight through executive orders or political statements.
Tariffs, Trade Barriers, and Realistic Expectations
Addressing speculation around tariff reductions, Vickery clarified that India has not agreed to eliminate all trade barriers, despite some claims suggesting otherwise. He said the joint statement reflects a more balanced and realistic position, protecting domestic interests while keeping negotiations open.
While tariffs have been reduced from earlier peaks, they remain significantly higher than pre-dispute levels, indicating that major hurdles still remain. However, Vickery praised India for resisting pressure from social media narratives and political messaging, choosing instead to maintain a rational stance focused on long-term stability.

India and European Union amp up their partnership in a world unsettled by Trump
He described the interim agreement as an important step toward repairing disruptions in bilateral trade relations and restoring confidence among businesses on both sides.
Building a Trade Partnership That Lasts
The newly announced framework for an Interim Trade Agreement reaffirms both countries’ commitment to a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement initiated by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The proposed pact aims to expand market access, strengthen supply chains, and promote balanced trade.
Vickery cautioned that durable partnerships cannot be built on headlines or online announcements alone. He emphasised the need for operationally sound agreements that survive political cycles and changing leadership.
According to him, India’s patient, detail-driven approach has positioned it as a reliable partner capable of sustaining long-term economic cooperation. As negotiations continue, both sides will now be tested on whether they can convert political intent into a stable, mutually beneficial trade framework.
