As tensions in West Asia intensify following the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader in joint US-Israeli operations, Iran’s exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi has announced that a transitional government under his leadership is ready to step in if the Islamic Republic collapses.

In a message posted on X from Paris, Pahlavi said preparations for a governing framework and a leadership structure are already underway to ensure continuity of governance in Iran if the current regime falls.

His remarks come as the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran enters its second week, raising fears of wider regional instability and disruptions to global energy supplies

Who is Reza Pahlavi and what is his claim to leadership?

Reza Pahlavi is the son of Iran’s last monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown during the Iranian Revolution that established the Islamic Republic.

Living in exile for decades, Pahlavi has long positioned himself as a prominent opposition figure advocating democratic governance in Iran. In his latest statement, he said preparations are already underway to ensure a smooth transition of power if the current regime collapses.

“To ensure that Iran does not experience a disruption in governance with the fall of the Islamic Republic, two important efforts have been underway in recent months. First, the development of a clear plan for governing the country within the framework of the Iran Prosperity Project. Second, identifying and selecting qualified women and men to serve in the Transitional System and implement this plan. In this process, many compatriots with valuable experience and the expertise declared their readiness to participate in the rebuilding of the country and to serve the homeland.”

What is the ‘Transitional System’ he is proposing?

According to Pahlavi, the proposed transitional administration would act as a temporary governing structure to stabilize Iran and lay the groundwork for long-term political reform.

He said a selection process is already underway to identify individuals capable of leading various parts of the interim administration. The process is being conducted through a committee led by economist Saeed Ghaseminejad.

Pahlavi explained that candidates from both inside Iran and the Iranian diaspora have been evaluated to take on roles within the transition framework.

“Within this framework, in recent months, capable individuals both inside and outside the country have been identified and evaluated to lead various sections of the Transitional System.”

He added that the goal is to restore order quickly if the current regime collapses.

“The Transitional System, under my leadership, will be ready to assume governance of the country as soon as the Islamic Republic falls, and in the shortest possible time, establish order, security, freedom, and the conditions for Iran's prosperity and flourishing.”

Why is this announcement coming now?

Pahlavi’s statement comes amid dramatic geopolitical developments after joint US-Israeli operations reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28.

The escalation has triggered retaliatory attacks by Iran on US and Israeli assets across Gulf countries, raising fears of a wider regional war. The conflict has also threatened shipping routes through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil supply.

As the war enters its 14th day, the exchange of strikes continues, with warnings that any closure of the waterway could severely disrupt global energy markets.

Meanwhile, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has warned that the rapidly escalating crisis in West Asia poses a serious threat to global peace and security.
