Constitutional legitimacy versus political opportunism
Premier Smith described a “significant and tragic fire” affecting many of the country’s military personnel. She said Alberta is in close contact with the federal government and thanked first responders and everyone providing care and support to those affected.
CAUSE UNDER INVESTIGATION
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating what caused the fire. In an emailed statement to CBC, Wainwright RCMP said early reports pointed to a fire at a training area and that it had sent numerous resources to assist.
Its initial involvement is winding down, though it has resources available if needed. Any further details, it said, will come from the Canadian Armed Forces.
THE BASE
CFB Wainwright has 690 military personnel and 300 civilian workers on a regular day, according to CBC. It became a training base for Canadian troops during the Korean War in the 1950s.
