In a significant development for regional diplomacy, Iran has confirmed that its Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, will visit India to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit.
The announcement signals a renewed push to deepen ties between Iran and India at a time of heightened geopolitical tension.
The confirmation came via Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaiel Baghaei, who highlighted the strength of the bilateral and multilateral relationship. He noted that both nations, as members of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, share a “good level of cooperation and coordination” across platforms.
New Delhi is set to host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14 and 15, a key milestone under India’s 2026 chairship. The gathering is expected to bring together top diplomats from member nations, offering a critical space for strategic dialogue.
Baghaei underscored the importance of the event, stating that the “simultaneous meeting is of importance to Iran” and adding that Tehran “looks forward to bilateral meetings with other ministers participating in this event,” including the “foreign minister of India as a friendly country.”
The visit comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions following US-Iran hostilities that began on February 18. Since then, Araghchi has been in frequent contact with India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, engaging in at least four high-level discussions.
During these exchanges, Araghchi shared updates on what Tehran described as US and Israeli strikes, warning that such actions threaten both regional and global stability. He used these interactions to push for stronger coordination among BRICS members to protect international order.

Now all of India is in his thrall
He also reiterated Iran’s stance, affirming its commitment to exercise its “legitimate right of self-defence.”
This will not be Araghchi’s first visit to India. His previous trip in May 2025 marked his first official visit after assuming office in August 2024. During that visit, he co-chaired the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting, a key platform for advancing bilateral cooperation.
The meetings, held on May 7 and 8, commemorated the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty and focused on reviewing ties while exploring new avenues in political, strategic, and economic domains. Alongside talks with Jaishankar, Araghchi also met President Droupadi Murmu, reinforcing diplomatic engagement at the highest levels.
The upcoming BRICS engagement provides both countries an opportunity to build on existing cooperation and address shared challenges amid a volatile global environment. With ongoing conflicts and shifting alliances, the meeting could shape how emerging powers like India and Iran coordinate within multilateral frameworks.
