India's T20I team appears poised for a leadership transition, with Shreyas Iyer set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as captain and Tilak Varma likely to take over as vice-captain, according to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources.
The move comes ahead of India's white-ball tour of Ireland and England and signals a new phase in the team's T20 setup despite its recent success on the global stage.
According to BCCI sources, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee have reached a consensus on appointing Iyer as India's new T20I captain, while Tilak Varma is expected to serve as his deputy.
Although the issue of T20I captaincy was not formally discussed during the BCCI Apex Council meeting on Thursday, sources indicated that the board's top officials have agreed on the leadership change.
Iyer is also expected to attend the selection committee meeting on June 6, where India's squad for the upcoming Ireland and England tour is likely to be announced.
The decision comes despite Suryakumar Yadav guiding India to a historic triumph at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Under his leadership, India successfully defended the T20 World Cup title and became the first team to retain the trophy. However, his personal performances with the bat failed to match the team's success. Suryakumar scored 242 runs in nine matches during the tournament.

Is the future of fashion Indian?
His struggles continued in IPL 2026, where he managed only 270 runs for Mumbai Indians. The franchise endured a disappointing campaign, finishing ninth in the points table, a factor that reportedly influenced discussions around the national team's leadership.
Iyer's elevation has been driven largely by his outstanding performances in domestic and franchise cricket.
The right-hander has not represented India in T20 Internationals since the match against Australia in Bengaluru in December 2023. However, he forced his way back into contention through a prolific IPL 2026 season with Punjab Kings.
Iyer scored 498 runs in the tournament, emerging as one of the standout performers and strengthening his credentials for both a return to the national side and a leadership role.
His strong form, combined with his captaincy experience across formats and tournaments, appears to have convinced selectors that he is the right candidate to lead India's T20 side into its next phase.
Tilak Varma's expected appointment as vice-captain suggests that selectors are also looking toward the future.
The young batter has established himself as one of India's most promising T20 players in recent years, and the deputy's role could serve as an important step in his leadership development within the national team structure.
India's next T20I assignment will begin with a two-match series against Ireland. The first match is scheduled for June 26, followed by the second on June 28.
The team will then travel to England for a five-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series.
If the expected leadership changes are formally confirmed, the Ireland tour could mark the beginning of Shreyas Iyer's tenure as India's new T20I captain and the start of a new chapter in the team's white-ball journey.
