Sarfaraz Khan Gets Another Shot as India's Injury List Grows

There is something almost cyclical about Sarfaraz Khan's Test career. He disappears. Then an opportunity opens up. And suddenly, everyone is talking about Sarfaraz again.

That cycle has begun once more. The BCCI on Sunday confirmed that Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of India's two-Test series against Sri Lanka after failing to fully recover from a right-toe stress reaction. Sarfaraz has been named his replacement and will join the squad in Colombo before India travel to Galle for the opening Test on August 15.

The BCCI said Sudharsan has made "significant progress" at its Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and remains under close medical supervision. But the recovery has not progressed quickly enough for him to make the Sri Lanka series.

For Sarfaraz, another door has opened. And it comes with a familiar question: what does he do with it this time?

Few Indian batters have generated as much debate around selection as Sarfaraz. For years, he kept piling up runs in domestic cricket, repeatedly putting his name in front of the selectors. When his Test opportunity finally arrived, he responded with a century and showed that his domestic form could translate to the international stage.

Yet a permanent place never followed. His omission from India's England plans was another reminder of how quickly the conversation around him can change. More recently, a cryptic social media post from Sarfaraz, "I may not fit in, but I'll fight", was widely interpreted as a reflection of his uncertain position.

Now circumstances have handed him another opening. But Sarfaraz isn't the only problem India are dealing with. Jasprit Bumrah is already out, having failed to recover fully from the left-knee injury he suffered during the ODI series against England. Aquib Nabi has been brought into the squad as his replacement. Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the first Test with a hamstring issue. Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are sidelined with hamstring and quadriceps injuries respectively, while Akash Deep continues his recovery from stress reactions in his back. Even captain Shubman Gill has been nursing a finger injury sustained during practice.

The result is a Test squad being reshaped by circumstance before the first ball has even been bowled. India's Sri Lanka series is part of the ongoing 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, and the team currently sits fifth in the standings after four wins and four defeats in nine matches. For Sarfaraz, though, the numbers matter less than the opportunity. He has spent years trying to get into India's plans. Now he has another chance to stay there. Sri Lanka may give him another Test cap. The bigger challenge will be turning another comeback into something more permanent.
