Sarfaraz Khan's India Return? Sai Sudharsan's Injury Could Open the Door

There is something oddly cyclical about Sarfaraz Khan's Test career.

Every few months, his name disappears from India's plans. Then an opportunity appears, often unexpectedly, and the conversation begins all over again.

That cycle may be repeating itself.

With Sai Sudharsan unlikely to recover in time for the Sri Lanka Test series, Sarfaraz is expected to return to the squad as his replacement, according to BCCI sources. The selectors are yet to make an official announcement, but if it happens, it will mark another chapter in one of Indian cricket's most debated selection stories.

Few Indian batters have inspired as much discussion without becoming regulars.

For years, Sarfaraz piled up runs in domestic cricket, forcing selectors to answer the same question after almost every Ranji Trophy season: What more does he have to do? When his opportunity finally came, he justified the hype with a string of impressive performances, including a Test century. Yet he soon found himself outside the squad again as India looked elsewhere while rebuilding its batting order.

His omission from the England tour surprised many, especially after another productive domestic season. More recently, Sarfaraz posted a cryptic message on social media—"I may not fit in, but I'll fight"—a line that many interpreted as a reflection of his uncertain place in India's plans.

Now, circumstances may have shifted once again.

Sudharsan, who had been racing against time to recover from injury, did not travel with the Indian squad for the warm-up game in Colombo and is unlikely to be fit before the opening Test in Galle. His absence has reopened a place in the batting group, with Sarfaraz emerging as the frontrunner to fill it.

His possible return also comes at a difficult moment for India. Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable, Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the opening Test, while Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep are also sidelined. Captain Shubman Gill, meanwhile, is nursing a finger injury sustained during practice.

For Sarfaraz, however, the bigger battle has rarely been fitness. It has been staying in the conversation.

If the recall is confirmed, Sri Lanka will offer more than another cap. It will present another chance to answer the one question that has followed him throughout his career: can he become more than Indian cricket's perpetual comeback story?
