Pranavi Urs began the final round with a three-shot lead. By the third hole, a triple bogey had put her pursuit of Asian Games gold under pressure.

The 23-year-old from Mysuru responded with three birdies, held her nerve over the closing holes and finished one stroke clear of her nearest challengers on Saturday to become the first Indian woman to win individual golf gold at the Games.

Her winning total of 15-under 265 edged China’s Yin Ruoning and Singapore’s Shannon Tan, who both finished at 14-under, in Aichi-Nagoya.

The victory ended India’s 24-year wait for an Asian Games golf gold, stretching back to Shiv Kapur’s men’s individual triumph in 2002. Pranavi also helped India secure women’s team silver alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar.

AN EARLY SETBACK, A COMPOSED RESPONSE

Pranavi’s overnight advantage gave her a strong position entering the final round, but the triple bogey on the third hole brought an immediate test of composure.

She recovered with three birdies to keep her challenge on course as Yin and Tan pressed for the title.

The contest remained tight through the closing stretch. Pranavi made crucial par putts, including a par on the 18th, to finish at 15-under and protect the one-stroke margin that delivered gold.

Her recovery turned a potentially costly early mistake into the defining test of a historic final round.

TWO MEDALS FOR PRANAVI

The individual title was one half of Pranavi’s medal haul.

Together with Aditi and Diksha, she helped India finish second in the women’s team competition with a total of 14-under 546. China won gold at 22-under 538, eight strokes ahead.

The best two scores from each country’s three golfers counted towards the team total. Aditi carded a final-round 67, while Diksha returned a 77.

India’s golfers finished the women’s competition with an individual champion and a team silver, with Pranavi contributing to both results.

INDIA’S GOLD COUNT RISES TO 18

Pranavi’s victory followed another breakthrough for India on the penultimate day of the Games.

Earlier on Saturday, 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod won women’s individual recurve archery gold, beating South Korea’s Oh Yejin in a shoot-off.

The golf medals subsequently took India’s overall tally to 79: 18 gold, 26 silver and 35 bronze, at the time of the report.

The men’s golf team of Veer Ahlawat, Saptak Talwar and Yuvraj Sandhu remained in action in the final round of the individual and team stroke-play competitions.
