Jasprit Bumrah continues to remain wicketless in the ongoing Indian Premier League season, in what has emerged as a surprising downturn for one of the finest pace bowlers across formats.

The Mumbai Indians spearhead has not picked up a single wicket in the IPL 2026 campaign so far. His latest outing saw him return with figures of 0 for 41 against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Bumrah’s wicketless run has coincided with a dip in the team’s fortunes, with the franchise losing four matches on the trot after winning their opening game of the season.

Adding to the concern, the pacer has conceded runs at an economy rate of 8.63.

Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene, however, refused to attribute the lean patch to any decline in Bumrah’s form. Instead, he pointed to the team’s inability to create pressure in the powerplay.

Yeah, I mean, I think Booms (Bumrah) is bowling well; it's just that we're not putting pressure in the powerplay.

Why are batters not taking risks against Jasprit Bumrah despite his wicketless run?

“They know they don't need to take too much risk against Booms, and while we've tried a few different things, which he is trying as well, the opposition is batting well. I can't quite put a finger on it and say he hasn't taken wickets for a specific reason, but as a unit, we've lacked that penetration on different surfaces. That is something we need to work on," the former Sri Lanka captain told reporters on Thursday.

Despite having established new-ball bowlers such as Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult, Mumbai Indians have struggled to take wickets in the first six overs this season.

Jayawardene believes the absence of early breakthroughs has allowed opposition batters to approach Bumrah cautiously.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan offered a technical perspective on Bumrah’s struggles, suggesting a reduction in slower deliveries.

"Wickets from Jasprit Bumrah's bowling are very important. There is no major issue with his form, but his average speed this season has been around 130 kmph. He has been using the slower ball about 44 per cent of the time, meaning almost every second ball is a slower one," Pathan said on his YouTube channel.

The analysis video was uploaded on Thursday before the Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings game.

"Now why is Jasprit Bumrah doing this? I think this needs a deeper look. If he bowls more fast deliveries and reduces the percentage of slower balls, the results will come. It is a very simple solution. Bumrah does not need coaching, but the numbers are showing what is happening," he added.
