Lionel Messi has spent nearly two decades doing things that seem impossible with a football.

Last week, he found himself in trouble for something far less glamorous.

Not a wonder goal. Not an assist. Not a record.

A slap.

Major League Soccer has fined the Inter Miami superstar after a heated confrontation with Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during a fiery 2-2 draw that quickly became one of the most talked-about matches of the MLS season. The amount of the fine has not been disclosed, but the incident has reignited a conversation that follows Messi wherever he goes: what happens when football's most celebrated player loses his cool?

What Exactly Did Lionel Messi Do?

The incident occurred deep into stoppage time during Inter Miami's clash with Philadelphia Union on August 19.

Television cameras captured Messi and Quinn Sullivan exchanging words away from the ball. Moments later, Messi appeared to make contact with the Philadelphia midfielder's head and neck area with an open hand before the pair squared up face-to-face. Referee Filip Dujic did not show a card, and play continued.

That, however, was not the end of the matter.

After reviewing the footage, the MLS Disciplinary Committee concluded that Messi had violated league rules regarding contact with an opponent's face, head or neck and issued an undisclosed fine. Inter Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined following a separate incident in the same match.

Why Was Messi Fined Even Though The Referee Took No Action?

This is where MLS rules become important.

According to the league's competition guidelines, the Disciplinary Committee can review incidents after matches, even when referees do not issue cards during the game. The league specifically allows retrospective punishment for actions involving contact with an opponent's face, head or neck. Such incidents carry a minimum financial penalty if they are deemed to have escalated tensions or contributed to confrontation.

In other words, escaping punishment on the field does not necessarily mean escaping punishment altogether.

The camera saw what the referee missed.

And MLS acted later.

Why Is Everyone Also Talking About Cavan Sullivan?

Because the match somehow became even more chaotic after the Messi incident.

In the 102nd minute, another confrontation broke out involving Philadelphia's Quinn Sullivan, his younger brother Cavan Sullivan and several Inter Miami players.

Cavan, only 16 years old and already regarded as one of American football's brightest prospects, was shown a red card alongside Miami midfielder Yannick Bright after tempers exploded near the penalty area. The teenager is already set to join Manchester City when he turns 18 in 2027, making him one of the most closely watched young players in world football.

But the story did not end there.

Philadelphia appealed.

And won.

Why Was Cavan Sullivan's Red Card Overturned?

An Independent Review Panel unanimously ruled that the dismissal should be rescinded.

The panel, which includes representatives from US Soccer, Canada Soccer and the Professional Referee Organisation (PRO), determined that the red card should not stand. As a result, the one-match suspension and accompanying fine were both cancelled, making Sullivan immediately eligible to play again.

The decision was significant because it spared one of American football's most exciting teenagers from missing a league match and added another twist to an already controversial evening.

Is This The First Time Messi Has Been Disciplined By MLS?

No.

In fact, this is the second time.

Back in February 2025, MLS fined Messi after he grabbed New York City FC assistant coach Mehdi Ballouchy by the neck following a match. That incident also fell under the league's policy governing contact with an opponent's face, head or neck.

For a player whose reputation is built largely on genius rather than confrontation, the two incidents stand out.

They are reminders that even football's most composed stars can occasionally be drawn into the emotion of the moment.

What Does This Mean For Inter Miami?

The fine itself changes little.

Messi remains available to play, and MLS has not imposed any suspension.

But the timing is far from ideal.

Inter Miami are chasing leaders Nashville in the Eastern Conference and cannot afford distractions as the season enters a crucial phase. Despite Messi's continued brilliance, Miami find themselves trying to close a significant gap at the top of the standings.

For now, the punishment is largely symbolic.

Yet it is also a reminder of something football fans often forget.

Messi's story in America is no longer just about goals, sold-out stadiums and record-breaking crowds.

Sometimes, it is about a flash of temper in the 101st minute of a match that refused to calm down.

And sometimes, even Lionel Messi gets called into the disciplinary office.
