India wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan is set for a defining summer in 2026, with a potential Indian Premier League captaincy role and a return to the national ODI setup both in focus.

Kishan has emerged as the front runner to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad at the start of IPL 2026, with uncertainty surrounding the fitness of current captain Pat Cummins.

Cummins has been sidelined since July 2025 due to a lumbar stress issue. Although he featured briefly in the Ashes last December, he missed the T20 World Cup 2026 and is yet to receive clearance from Cricket Australia to resume full duties.

According to multiple media reports, the SRH management has already discussed leadership options, with Kishan emerging as the “most suitable candidate” to take charge in Cummins’ absence.

Run banaate rehna hai aur jeette rehna hai (Have to keep scoring runs and keep winning).” Those were Ishan Kishan’s words after his arrival in Patna last week, following India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign.

Can Ishan Kishan’s T20 World Cup heroics strengthen his case for SRH captaincy?

Kishan enjoyed a standout tournament, finishing as India’s second highest run getter. His campaign included a half century in the final and two Player of the Match performances against Namibia and arch rivals Pakistan.

Despite not having led a side in the IPL before, Kishan brings considerable leadership experience.

He captained India to the Under-19 World Cup final in 2016 and has led Jharkhand in 79 matches across formats.

He recently guided them to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title. His T20 captaincy record stands at 29 matches with 23 wins, translating to a win percentage of 79.31.

If confirmed, Kishan will make his IPL captaincy debut on March 28 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

He would become SRH’s 11th captain and the first Indian to lead the franchise since Bhuvneshwar Kumar in 2023.

Is Ishan Kishan ahead of rivals in the race for India’s ODI squad?

Beyond the IPL, Kishan’s strong T20 World Cup showing has also placed him firmly in contention for a return to India’s ODI squad.

With the ODI World Cup scheduled next year in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, selectors are expected to closely monitor performances in the lead up.

India are set to play a three match ODI series against Afghanistan starting June 14 in Dharamsala shortly after the IPL. Kishan could feature in the squad, even as a specialist batter, provided he maintains form and fitness.

Competition remains, particularly from Sanju Samson, who also impressed during the T20 World Cup.

However, according to insiders in the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Kishan is currently “ahead of both Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel” in the race for selection in the 50 over format.

Abhishek Sharma was also considered for the SRH captaincy role, having led Punjab in 31 matches, but lacks Kishan’s proven track record at the senior level.

With leadership responsibilities possibly awaiting him in the IPL and national selection prospects gaining momentum, Kishan’s performances in the coming months could shape both his franchise and international future.
