Indian cricket welcomed a new record-holder on Saturday as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his international debut in the second T20I against England in Manchester. His debut is significant not only because of his age but also because it ends a 36-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar. The teenager's rapid rise has been fuelled by extraordinary performances in the IPL, youth cricket and domestic competitions, making him one of India's most exciting batting prospects.

Sooryavanshi breaks a record that stood for 36 years

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was named in India's playing XI for the second T20I against England in Manchester, becoming India's youngest-ever international debutant at just 15 years and 99 days.

In doing so, he surpassed the record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days and his ODI debut at 16 years and 238 days. According to CricViz, Sooryavanshi is also the youngest debutant from any Test-playing nation in T20 International history.

His selection had already made headlines when he was included in India's T20I squads for the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games. The call-up itself made him the youngest player ever selected for India's senior national team, eclipsing a record that had stood for more than three decades.

Why selectors fast-tracked the teenage batting sensation

Sooryavanshi's elevation to the national side follows a sensational IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals. He finished as the tournament's highest run-scorer with 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30, registering one century and five half-centuries while smashing a record 72 sixes.

His dominance earned him the Orange Cap along with the Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker and Super Sixes awards.

He carried that form into the recent tri-series in Sri Lanka featuring Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. The teenager scored 211 runs in five innings at an average of 42.20 and a strike rate approaching 201. His standout knock of 94 came in the final, while he also recorded the fastest List A fifty in history by reaching the milestone in just 11 balls against Sri Lanka A.

The numbers behind one of India's brightest young stars

Although Sooryavanshi's first-class record is still developing—with 207 runs in eight matches at an average of 17.25—his performances in age-group and limited-overs cricket have been exceptional.

He has amassed 564 runs in 13 List A matches at an average of 43.38 and a strike rate of 176.80, including a highest score of 190.

In youth ODIs, he is already India's highest run-scorer, compiling 1,412 runs in 25 matches at an average of 56.48 and a strike rate of 165.72, with four centuries and seven half-centuries.

His reputation grew further during the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, where he finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 439 runs in seven innings at an average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.49. He helped India lift the title while also setting a tournament record with 30 sixes.

His overall T20 numbers underline his attacking approach. Across 34 innings, he has scored 1,477 runs at an average of 44.75 and a strike rate of 220.44, including four centuries and six fifties.

His IPL career has been equally prolific. In just 23 innings, Sooryavanshi has accumulated 1,028 runs at an average of 44.69 and a strike rate of 228.95, with two centuries, six half-centuries and 96 sixes.

At only 15 years and 99 days, Sooryavanshi's international debut marks the beginning of what Indian cricket hopes will be another remarkable teenage success story—one that has already rewritten a record once thought untouchable.
