The FIFA World Cup 2026 has already entered the record books, becoming the highest-attended edition in the tournament's history even before the knockout rounds have fully unfolded.
The landmark was achieved on June 25 during the Group E clash between Germany and Ecuador at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, highlighting the enormous global interest generated by the expanded competition.
The tournament surpassed the previous attendance record set during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, which drew a total of 3,587,538 spectators.
The new benchmark was confirmed during the second half of the Germany-Ecuador match when stadium screens displayed an aggregate attendance figure of 3,605,357 spectators.
FIFA confirmed the achievement on its official website, stating: "Fifty-six matches in, FIFA World Cup 2026 has already broken the aggregate attendance record for a FIFA World Cup at any stage - the previous record was 3,587,538 at USA 1994."
The milestone is particularly notable because it was reached with several matches still remaining in the tournament, suggesting the final attendance figure could set a significantly higher record.
The 2026 edition has benefited from a number of factors, including football's growing popularity across North America and the tournament's expanded format.
With more teams and more matches than previous editions, the competition has attracted large crowds across multiple host venues. The record demonstrates the scale of fan engagement throughout the tournament and underlines FIFA's confidence in the expanded World Cup model.

The attendance milestone came during one of the tournament's biggest surprises.
Germany appeared set for a comfortable evening when Leroy Sane scored after just 1.49 minutes from a Florian Wirtz assist. The goal survived a VAR review despite Ecuador's protests over a possible foul in the build-up involving Aleksandar Pavlovic and Pedro Vite.
The strike became the second-fastest goal in Germany's World Cup history.
However, Ecuador responded quickly. Nilson Angulo equalised in the ninth minute with a powerful long-range effort that beat veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, ensuring the sides went into half-time level at 1-1.
As the match progressed, Ecuador matched Germany's intensity and increasingly threatened on the counterattack.
The winning moment arrived in the 77th minute.
Following a corner kick, Kevin Rodriguez won an aerial challenge inside the box before Gonzalo Plata reacted fastest to convert from close range.
Germany pushed hard for an equaliser during the closing stages and through seven minutes of stoppage time, but Ecuador's defence held firm to preserve a memorable 2-1 victory.
The victory secured Ecuador's place in the Round of 32 and marked only the second time in the nation's history that it has progressed beyond the World Cup group stage.
Their previous and only other qualification for the knockout rounds came during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The result therefore represented not only one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 tournament but also a landmark achievement in Ecuadorian football history.
With attendance records already broken and major surprises unfolding on the pitch, the FIFA World Cup 2026 continues to deliver historic moments.
As the tournament moves deeper into the knockout rounds, overall attendance figures are expected to rise further, potentially setting a record that could stand for years while adding to what is already one of the most memorable World Cups in history.
