There is a particular kind of madness to this Indian Premier League season, and it is the best kind.
With 15 matches still to be played, eight teams remain in genuine contention for the four playoff spots, and not a single one has sealed their berth.
Two franchises have already been sent home, but the rest are locked in a scramble so tight, so unpredictable, that even a team sitting at the top of the table cannot afford complacency.
Here’s a look at the qualifying scenarios for all of the eight teams remaining in the season.
Punjab Kings: Trouble in Paradise
Few stories in this season have been as surprising as that of the Punjab Kings.
Under Shreyas Iyer, PBKS went undefeated in their first seven matches, looking every inch the team destined to cruise into the playoffs.
Then came four consecutive defeats, and suddenly, a campaign that once felt inevitable is now laced with anxiety.

Now all of India is in his thrall
At 13 points from 11 matches, Punjab still have their fate in their own hands, but the margin for error has all but vanished. The permutations around them are cruel in both directions: it is mathematically possible for them to qualify with 13 points if several results fall their way, yet it is equally possible they could finish on 17 and still miss out, given that four other teams retain the ability to finish above that tally.
Their remaining three fixtures are against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants.
Two of those games will be played in Dharamsala, a venue that already exposed their vulnerabilities when they struggled there against Delhi Capitals on Monday.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Table-Toppers With Work Still to Do
A last-ball win against Mumbai Indians on Sunday lifted Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the summit of the standings, but the view from the top comes with its own warnings.
RCB need two more wins to be almost certain of qualification, because as many as four other teams could overtake them if they finish on 16 points.
In an extreme scenario, six teams could still finish on 18 points or more. What separates RCB in such a situation is their net run rate of 1.103, easily the best among all remaining sides, which means 18 points would almost certainly be enough for them.
Two of their three remaining matches are against teams currently placed in the top four, though Punjab's recent slump softens that concern slightly. Their next assignment is against Kolkata Knight Riders, a team sitting eighth but very much alive in the race.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Riding on the High Tide
If momentum means anything, Sunrisers Hyderabad are the team to watch.
Six wins from their last seven matches represent the kind of sustained excellence that alters the complexion of a season.
Also on 14 points from 11 games and carrying a net run rate of +0.737, SRH are in a position where a single victory is enough to book their playoff place. Two wins, and they are pushing for a top-two finish.
Gujarat Titans: Points in the Bank, NRR a Concern
Gujarat Titans, steered by Shubman Gill, have surged late in the season to reach 14 points, but a negative net run rate complicates their arithmetic.
Should things go to a tie-breaker, GT would find themselves on the wrong side of the calculation, which is why two more wins are realistically necessary for them to feel secure.
Like RCB and SRH, they could qualify with 14 points, but equally, 18 points would not guarantee a top-four finish in a congested table.
Chennai Super Kings: Redemption on the Cards
Chennai Super Kings began IPL 2026 in the worst possible fashion, losing their first three matches.
What followed has been a remarkable resurgence. Six wins from their last eight games have brought CSK back to 12 points, and they remain entirely capable of making the playoffs.
The requirement for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s ‘Men in Yellow’ is at least two wins from their remaining three matches to reach 16 points.
Rajasthan Royals: A Season Slipping Through Their Fingers
The Rajasthan Royals' situation is like a free-fall from the top. Also on 12 points, they mirror CSK in terms of their requirements, but the trajectory could not be more different.
Five defeats from their last seven matches tell the story of a campaign unravelling. Just a few weeks ago, after their ninth game, Rajasthan sat in third place with 12 points, full of promise.
Now they have dropped to sixth, fighting for survival. The extended gaps between their fixtures have only allowed other teams to leapfrog them.
A single win, at this point, would all but end their hunt for a top-four finish. They need at least two to stay in control of their own destiny.
Kolkata Knight Riders: The Last Throw of the Dice
For Kolkata Knight Riders, the margin has reduced to zero.
On 9 points with four games remaining, they must win every single match to reach 17 points. One loss, given their net run rate of -0.169, will in all likelihood end their season, as 15 points would probably not be sufficient to see them through.
Qualifying with 13 points is an extremely remote possibility, contingent on every variable breaking in their favour.
The encouraging news is that their final three games are at home at Eden Gardens, a ground where they have won just once in four attempts this season, including a washout. But that lean record predates their current form, which has delivered four consecutive wins.
Delhi Capitals: Hoping for a Mathematical Miracle
Delhi Capitals are, by any honest assessment, clinging on. Ten points from 12 matches leaves them with almost no room to manoeuvre. They must win all of their remaining games to reach 14 points, and even then would require a mathematical miracle involving massive net run rate swings and collapses from every team above them.
There is a certain poetic symmetry to how this race may conclude.
Delhi play the final match of the league stage, against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on 24 May. If either team is still in contention when that game arrives, it will mean that the rest of the field has produced results nobody anticipated.
It would mean, in other words, more of exactly what this IPL season has already delivered in abundance.
The race for the top four is far from over. It may, in fact, be just getting started.
