Cabo Verde continued their remarkable FIFA World Cup 2026 journey by securing a place in the Round of 32 after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in Houston. The result saw the Blue Sharks finish second in Group H behind Spain and become the smallest country ever to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.

Tiny Nation, Massive Achievement

Cabo Verde etched their name into World Cup history by becoming the smallest nation to advance beyond the group stage. The island nation, also the third-smallest country ever to appear at the FIFA World Cup, progressed after drawing all three of their group matches.

According to FIFA, Cabo Verde became the first team since Chile at the 1998 World Cup to reach the knockout rounds after drawing every group-stage game.

The Blue Sharks opened their campaign with an impressive draw against European champions Spain before earning a 2-2 result against Uruguay. Their stalemate against Saudi Arabia was enough to seal qualification alongside Spain from Group H.

Midfielder Deroy Duarte was named Player of the Match for his influential display.

Cabo Verde came closest to breaking the deadlock when Jamiro Monteiro burst past Saud Abdulhamid and forced Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais into a save with a low effort.

Monteiro threatened again early in the second half after Wagner Pina created space down the right flank and cut the ball back, but his attempt lacked power and was comfortably gathered by Al-Owais.

Kevin Pina also tested the Saudi goalkeeper with a curling left-footed strike that drifted narrowly wide of the target.

As Cabo Verde increased the pressure, Nuno da Costa led a swift counterattack before setting up Laros Duarte, whose effort was denied by another strong save from Al-Owais.

Da Costa then squandered a late opportunity after Garry Rodrigues delivered a low cross into the area, but his side-footed attempt flashed just wide of the post.

Argentina Await in Round of 32

Despite failing to find a breakthrough, Cabo Verde held firm to secure one of the most memorable qualification stories of the tournament.

Coach Bubista's side will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32 in Miami on July 3, with the Blue Sharks aiming to extend their fairytale run on football's biggest stage.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, finished bottom of Group H with two points from three matches.
