With the IPL 2026 league stage past its halfway mark, the race for the top four is entering its most critical phase. Sunrisers Hyderabad sit at the summit, but no team has sealed a playoffs spot yet. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are staring at the exit door. Here is where every team stands and what each of them needs.
The top four teams at the end of 70 league matches qualify for the playoffs. The top two meet in Qualifier 1, with the winner heading straight to the final. Teams finishing third and fourth play the Eliminator, and the winner of that game faces the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2.
The magic number to qualify has historically been 16 points in the current 70-match format, though in IPL 2024 it dipped to 14 on the back of NRR.
After Match 50, Sunrisers Hyderabad top the IPL 2026 points table with 14 points from 11 games. Punjab Kings follow with 13 points from 10 games. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals are level on 12 points each in third and fourth, separated by +1.234 NRR of RCB. Gujarat Titans, also on 12 points, sit just outside the top four on a negative NRR.

SRH are the closest to qualification. They need just one win from their remaining three games to hit 16 points. Punjab Kings, last year's finalists, need three more points from four remaining games. Reportedly, PBKS are also in contention to break the record of 20 points in the current format.
Defending champions RCB are well placed but not safe. They have four games left against MI, KKR, PBKS, and SRH, and need three wins to comfortably reach 16. Their NRR of 1.234 is the strongest in the top four, which could prove vital if the points table tightens further.
Chennai Super Kings, with 10 points from 10 games, reportedly need three wins from their final four fixtures to hit 16. Gujarat Titans, on 12 points, have four games remaining and need two wins. Delhi Capitals, however, face the steepest climb.
DC have 8 points and must win all four remaining matches just to reach 16, a scenario that relies heavily on other results going their way as well.
Not mathematically, but the picture is grim. Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants both have just 6 points from 10 games, with a maximum of 14 points possible. Even a perfect run is unlikely to be enough. KKR, with 7 points and five games to go, can still theoretically reach 17 but will need maximum support from results elsewhere.
With RR, RCB, GT and CSK all in the mix for the third and fourth spots, NRR could ultimately determine who goes through. The final weeks of IPL 2026 will not just be about winning. Winning big, and winning fast, will matter just as much.
