Teenager Yuvraj Samra announced his arrival on the global stage with a record-breaking century at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, powering Canada to a historic total and rewriting tournament history.
Playing at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, the 19-year-old produced a stunning 110 off 65 balls, becoming the youngest batter to score a T20 World Cup century. His innings, featuring 11 fours and six sixes, helped Canada post 173 for 20 against New Zealand after opting to bat first. Samra’s effort surpassed Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad’s previous age record and became the highest individual score by an Associate nation player in tournament history. He shared a 116-run opening stand with captain Dilpreet Bajwa, while Dilon Heyliger and Navneet Dhaliwal added valuable runs.
New Zealand’s bowlers Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Kyle Jamieson, and James Neesham picked up a wicket each, but Samra’s dominance ensured Canada stayed firmly in the contest for a Super Eights spot. With both teams needing victory, the innings significantly shifted momentum.
Born in Brampton, Ontario, Samra grew up immersed in cricket, inspired by his father Baljit Singh, a passionate follower of the game. He trained in local leagues and honed his skills at the Patiala Shahi Cricket Club under coach Amarinder Bhatia. His rise was swift, moving from age-group cricket in 2023 to international tours in 2024, before making his ODI and T20I debuts in 2025. This World Cup match marked only the 19th T20I of his young career.

The performance state at its peak
Named after Indian legend Yuvraj Singh, Samra mirrors his namesake’s aggressive style and flair for big hitting. He has even met Singh during the latter’s stint in Canada, a moment that added personal significance to his journey.
Samra’s century has emerged as one of the standout moments of the tournament, underlining the growing competitiveness of Associate nations. With Canada fighting to remain in contention, his performance has not only boosted team morale but also signalled the arrival of a new global star.
As the tournament progresses, the teenager’s fearless approach and maturity under pressure suggest that this innings may be remembered as the beginning of a long and influential international career.
