Asian Games 2026: Manu Bhaker, Tajinderpal Singh Toor Named Flagbearers; India Women Reach Cricket Semis  

India will have a double reason to celebrate as the country’s athletes prepare for the opening ceremony of the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker and shot-put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor have been named India’s flagbearers, while the women’s cricket team has already secured its place in the semifinals with a commanding win over Japan.

The two developments underline India’s preparations for the continental multi-sport event, which runs from September 19 to October 4, with more than 500 Indian athletes set to compete across 37 sports.

While Bhaker and Toor will lead the Indian contingent at Saturday’s opening ceremony, the women’s cricket team has made an early statement on the field, defeating Japan by eight wickets in Friday’s quarterfinal to set up a semifinal encounter against Bangladesh.

Manu Bhaker, Tajinderpal Singh Toor to Lead India at Opening Ceremony

Team India confirmed the flagbearers through its official account on X, introducing Bhaker and Toor ahead of the opening ceremony in Aichi-Nagoya.

Bhaker, who won two bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will compete in the women’s 10m air pistol, women’s 25m pistol and 10m air pistol mixed team events. Her performance in Paris made her the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympic Games.

Toor, meanwhile, will aim to extend his dominance in the men’s shot put. The Indian athlete won gold at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and successfully defended his title at the 2023 Hangzhou edition, where he recorded a throw of 20.36 metres.

The appointments were confirmed by India’s chef de mission Sahdev Yadav and the Athletics Federation of India, respectively.

India Women Beat Japan by Eight Wickets, Set Up Bangladesh Semifinal

India’s women’s cricket team advanced to the semifinals after registering an eight-wicket victory over Japan in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Opting to bowl first, India restricted Japan to 57 in 19.5 overs with a disciplined bowling performance. Ayaka Kato-Stafford top-scored for Japan with 25 off 47 deliveries, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled against the Indian attack.

Sree Charani led the bowling effort with four wickets, while Shafali Verma claimed two. Shreyanka Patil and Deepti Sharma picked up a wicket apiece.

India made light work of the chase, reaching 59/2 in just five overs to seal victory with 90 balls to spare. Shafali Verma was the standout performer with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 40 off 15 deliveries, including four boundaries.

After Gunalan Kamalini was dismissed for a duck and Bharti Fulmali fell for six, Richa Ghosh joined Verma and contributed an unbeaten 12 off six balls. Verma finished the contest in emphatic fashion, launching Shimako Kato over long-on for a six with one run required.

India will now face Bangladesh in the semifinals on Sunday, while Pakistan take on Sri Lanka in the other last-four encounter.

India’s Asian Games 2026 Campaign: Athletes, Medal Targets and Key Events

India heads into the 20th edition of the Asian Games after finishing fourth in the Hangzhou 2023 medal standings with 107 medals, including 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze.

The Indian contingent will feature five individual Olympic medallists, although defending javelin throw champion Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn due to an ankle injury.

PV Sindhu will spearhead India’s badminton campaign, while Mirabai Chanu leads the weightlifting contingent. Lovlina Borgohain will compete in boxing, and Aman Sehrawat will represent India in wrestling.

Athletics is expected to be a major part of India’s campaign, with more than 70 track and field athletes set to compete. Gulveer Singh, Tejaswin Shankar and Olympian Sarvesh Kushare are among the athletes to watch, alongside Toor in the shot put.

India will also seek to defend its titles in men’s and women’s cricket, kabaddi and men’s hockey. Shreyas Iyer will lead the men’s cricket team in the T20 competition, with teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also included in the squad. The women’s team, meanwhile, will be led by T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

The hockey tournaments will carry additional significance, with the men’s and women’s winners securing direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. India will also have opportunities to earn LA 2028 quota places in archery, sailing, squash, surfing and tennis.

The Asian Games will feature athletes from 45 countries and regions competing across 43 sports and 469 medal events. Japan is hosting the continental sporting event for the third time, having previously staged it in Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.

With Bhaker and Toor leading the contingent at the opening ceremony and the women’s cricket team already through to the semifinals, India’s campaign in Japan is set to feature a mix of established Olympic medallists, defending champions and emerging talent.
