EXPLAINED | Who Is Kimi Antonelli, the 20-Year-Old Who Became F1’s Youngest Champion?

What happened? Kimi Antonelli became Formula 1’s youngest world champion at 20 years and 68 days after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, 2026.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the race, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished second and Antonelli completed the top three for Mercedes. The Italian had accumulated enough championship points to put the season’s title beyond his rivals’ reach.
“We did it. Thank you so much,” he said over the radio.
He secured the title in only his second F1 season.
Who is Kimi Antonelli?
His full name is Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Born in Bologna, Italy, on August 25, 2006, he is the son of sports-car racer Marco Antonelli.
He developed through karting, racing small, lightweight machines that teach drivers braking, overtaking and car control. Mercedes brought him into its junior programme in April 2019, when he was 12.

Coping with an explosive Middle East
That programme identifies and develops promising young drivers before they reach F1. Antonelli’s relationship with Mercedes therefore began years before he was old enough to race one of its Formula 1 cars.
How can finishing third make someone world champion?
Because winning a grand prix and winning the championship are different achievements.
A grand prix is one race. The drivers’ championship rewards the points accumulated across the season. In a full-points grand prix, the winner receives 25 points, second place earns 18 and third earns 15. Shorter Sprint races at selected events also award points.
Antonelli arrived in Mexico needing only ninth place to guarantee the title. Third gave him considerably more than he required. After the race, he had 380 points, against Verstappen’s 261: a 119-point advantage. Four grands prix remain, and the championship has been mathematically settled.
The championship rewards the whole season, so the race winner and the newly crowned champion can be different drivers.
How did Antonelli climb the racing ladder so quickly?
He kept winning in the categories below F1.
In 2022, he won both the Italian and German Formula 4 championships. Formula 4 is an early step into single-seater cars, where drivers sit alone in purpose-built racing machines.
He followed those titles with the Formula Regional Middle East and European crowns in 2023. Mercedes then supported a jump to Formula 2 in 2024, bypassing Formula 3. F2 is the championship immediately below F1.
He finished sixth in F2, with wins at Silverstone and Budapest. Mercedes’ decision to promote him therefore rested on its assessment of his potential and development, rather than an F2 championship trophy.
Why did Mercedes give him Hamilton’s seat?
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari for 2025 created a vacancy alongside George Russell. Mercedes chose Antonelli, announcing the decision shortly after his 18th birthday.
The responsibility was enormous. Hamilton had won six of his seven world titles with Mercedes, helping define the team’s most successful era.
Antonelli was being asked to learn at the highest level in a car that carried expectations of winning. Mercedes backed a driver it had developed through its own programme, accepting the risks that came with his limited experience.
Was he an instant success?
His early experience included a very public setback.
On August 30, 2024, Antonelli crashed roughly 10 minutes into his first F1 practice appearance at Monza. He lost control at the fast Parabolica corner while driving Russell’s Mercedes. It was a practice session, before his full-time F1 debut.
His first racing season in 2025 brought three podium finishes, meaning results in the top three, and 150 points. He finished seventh in the championship.
That was valuable experience, but it was not a title-winning debut. His transformation into champion came in his second season.
What made his 2026 season so strong?
By Mexico, Antonelli had won nine grands prix. His first F1 victory came in China in March, and further wins included Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco.
The title also required points on weekends when someone else was faster. Mexico supplied the decisive example: finishing third was sufficient, so chasing an unnecessary victory would have added risk.
Antonelli acknowledged the machinery supporting his performances: “Very early on, we had such a strong car,” he said after clinching the championship.
His achievement combines driving ability, a competitive Mercedes and the ability to turn opportunities into results.
What did he have to survive in Mexico?
A disrupted race that repeatedly changed the circumstances around him.
Antonelli started fourth. A heavy crash for Valtteri Bottas brought out a red flag, which stops the race. Bottas was checked and released from the medical centre. A later crash involving Arvid Lindblad brought out the Safety Car, which slows and groups the field while an incident is dealt with.
Antonelli regained third place by overtaking Leclerc after the restart and held the position to the finish. Mercedes praised his management of the opening stint and his composure after the interruption changed its strategy.
Why were Hamilton and Leclerc arguing?
The Ferrari team-mates fought for position on the opening lap. Leclerc went off the track during the battle and received a five-second penalty for leaving the circuit and gaining an advantage.
Their confrontation helped Verstappen move into contention. He ultimately won, with Hamilton finishing less than a second behind.
It supplied the race’s immediate drama. Antonelli’s concern was completing the result that would settle the championship.
Why is this such a big moment for Italy?
Antonelli is Italy’s first Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
He also broke Sebastian Vettel’s youngest-champion record. Vettel won his first title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli achieved it at 20 years and 68 days.
And he did it with Mercedes. His nationality and his team’s nationality are separate: the Italian driver’s title does not make Ferrari the champion.
How does Antonelli’s route connect to Indian racing?
India has its own Formula 4 championship, giving young racers access to one of the categories through which Antonelli developed.
His career illustrates how much lies beyond that first opportunity: results in increasingly competitive series, sustained development, team support and eventually an available F1 seat.
Mercedes identified him at 12 and supported his progression for years. For Indian racing, his story makes the quality of the pathway from junior competition to international opportunities especially relevant.
What happens next?
The next race weekend is in São Paulo, Brazil, on November 6–8. Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi follow.
Antonelli’s drivers’ title is secured. Mercedes is still pursuing the separate constructors’ championship, the team competition based on points scored by both its drivers.
Mercedes’ long investment has produced a world champion. Antonelli’s next challenge is to sustain that standard as the driver everyone else is trying to beat.
