Tamil Nadu stands on the cusp of a political shift as actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay prepares to take oath as Chief Minister, ending decades of Dravidian dominance. The moment is as personal as it is historic, with family pride, political symbolism, and public expectation converging in Chennai.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a dramatic break from the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK formations. His party secured 118 seats—just enough for a majority—and later consolidated power with support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.
Following this coalition backing, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar invited Vijay to form the government, asking him to prove his majority in the Assembly before May 13.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 10 AM at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium under heightened security, with prominent leaders including Rahul Gandhi expected to attend.
Vijay’s ascent is particularly significant as he becomes the first leader outside the traditional Dravidian power structure to lead the state since 1967. His journey—from cinema icon to political disruptor—has drawn inevitable comparisons with former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s enduring link between film and politics.

Now all of India is in his thrall
The emotional weight of the moment is perhaps most visible within Vijay’s own family, who have expressed overwhelming joy and gratitude ahead of the ceremony.
His father, filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar, shared his excitement, saying, “I am very happy. We are going to attend the function. I am going to enjoy that my son is going to take the oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.”
His mother, Sobha Chandrasekhar, highlighted the emotional coincidence of the day, stating, “I am so happy. It is Mother's Day today, I am very happy.”
Vijay’s cousins echoed similar sentiments of pride and gratitude. Vimala Britto remarked, “As his family, we are very, very happy. We need to thank the supporters and the people. May God bless Vijay. As the Chief Minister, he will do the best out of everything.”
Another family member added, “We are very proud. All credits to God and the people of Tamil Nadu.”
Popularly known as ‘Thalapathy,’ Vijay built a formidable political base through his cinematic influence and social messaging. His films frequently tackled themes like corruption and drug abuse, shaping his image as a socially conscious figure long before his formal political entry.
Although TVK was launched only in 2024, Vijay’s political intent had been speculated for years. In his first major political speech on October 28, 2024, he invoked leaders like Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, C. N. Annadurai, K. Kamaraj, and B. R. Ambedkar, positioning his party around social justice while distancing himself from atheistic ideology.
He has also openly embraced his Christian identity while advocating for secular politics, presenting himself as a bridge between tradition and modern governance.
In the 2026 elections, Vijay won from both Perambur and Trichy East constituencies and is expected to vacate one seat.
